me my wife and 5 year old son Headed out on the salt side of bushy park. We were hoping to get some trout or reds in the boat. fishing the bottom with mud minnows. We ended up hooking up to some fish just not what we were expecting. the first fish caught me off guard and put up a decent fight, about 10/15 mins my wife saw a silver belly and cried shark but as it got closer to the boat we saw it was a catfish. I thought to my self catfish in salt… after that we ended up hooking up to two more cats, one for my wife and one for my son, My son caught his personnel best and called it “the biggest fish ever!!” it made my day just with his smiles.
the day did leave me puzzled tho, are there still reds and trout in this area this time of year? and are catfish common around this area? we were in the creek to the left of that submarine down on the right side as the creek bends to the right.
Yes there are plenty of reds and trout in Bushy Park this time of year. Big cats or common especially with mud minnows on the bottom. You might catch a striper also.

If that’s all I have to worry about…there’s nothing to worry about.
Yeah Bushy if full of catfish. The water is actually mostly fresh, according to my salinity meters at the house… depending on the tide and it varies. It has more than enough salinity for crabs, shrimp, mullet, and the various inshore species though.
Excellent catfish though!!! Sounds like a great day!!
I’ve caught many a catfish near Bushy Park area, got one really big one!

around every bend theres the promise of a treasure that can only be caught and seen in a blink.. and in your minds eye..and sometimes if youre lucky..in a picture..its there for just a minute...then gone..but hopefully once youve seen it it will remain in your heart forever. Theres nothing like the "Smell" and sounds of the creek. Its not just one thing that makes it familiar..its all of it.
ahh thanks for the info guys!! and ya my wife snapped the photo and let me clean it out on the deck we had catfish stew was yum, any tips or tricks for catching reds out there this time of year?
I’m from Ohio and i so tired of catching catfish, i’ve caught catfish almost as big as me out of the Ohio river even done some noodling a time or two takes about a case a beer or so on camping trips to get me out there sticking my hands in mud holes pulling out catfish… lol i’ve been down here past 4 years and still exploring the terrain and water ways out here and i love it. but my name says it all when it comes to salt water fishing. so any tips or tricks would be appreciated greatly!
Way to go on the catfish, and good on ya for taking the family with you!
I didn’t know about the catfish there either until I watched some other guys pull some nice ones out of there.
Bushy park has a great habitat for a lot of fish. There are reds and trout all around where you caught that cat. Try throwing into some shallower water with the same bait. Toss up into a few of the creek mouths and you might catch trout and reds instead of the catfish that are hiding down in the holes.
If you’re tired of catfish and see me up at the landing, you can always toss them into my cooler.

As all have atated your in brackish water and you’ll also catch a largemouth in an area you thought should be saltwater. I fish this area and come up with those bigboys from time to time with muds on the bottom. As you continue to fish the area you’ll find good success with the reds and the trout. The further you go up the cooper the less your chances of reds trouts or an ocassional flounder. Instead of going left once you get in the cooper try fishing creeks slightly off to the right as your headed toward the fueling station.

On reds and trout, I would only say KEEP MOVING until you find them. My last boat didn’t have a trolling motor and I had to anchor to fish a spot. VERY hit and miss on the Cooper. Now I have a trolling motor, work different depths, points and structure and have more success. It is chock full of cats, though! Some bigguns!
Thanks again for the tips guys,ya i try to move often but i don’t have a trolling motor on my boat yet, so i’ve been anchoring for 10/15 mins then moving if i don’t have any bites,i actually put in under 526 and cruse up that creek from the bottom but i all ways come out by the submarine before heading back down the cooper, it seams i’m all ways at the same bend when i catch something up there. and i haven’t had any reds on the line since last summer, but i will keep trying. thanks again guys.
