I’ve heard the same thing leadenwahboy has with the added bonus of they are repeat offenders because they don’t receive serous punishment and they are still allowed to return to commercial fishing. By committing crimes you become a criminal if you repeat these things its not a mistake its who you are. People who exploit resources like that should be treated like child molesters in the since if they are caught in the around the resource they should be charged. As much as I’m against the over charging, I’m not because I understand. Its based on the potential of what the process or deal would come out to, It doesn’t make a difference if you rob a bank for 50 or 500 dollars its still bank robbery as you intended. If I destroy a farmers field when they are seedlings I just cost him the whole field at full value even though there was no guarantee of a harvest. I heard there house was raided before this because of similar issues and that’s what led to this conviction. You should research a couple of the names involved if you feel pity for them. The same people get the same permits because there is limited resources and imagine having them take from you because someone else wants to try, and if they divide it down it won’t be worth the trouble, Imagine if everyone who wanted a permit got one. Not getting a permit or unfair selection is the worst excuse, for there to be fair it would mean everyone is entitled to commercial fishing, which its not. I think commercial fishing needs to be reduced greatly and reregulated. I have met a lot of commercial fishers and most are not the best of people, and money and efficiency is the top priority, not protecting the resources for future harvest. Offshore fishing has been ruined by commercial fishing the regs are absolute joke and the only people who can actually keep fish is commercial and inshore would be to if they were allowed too, look at the shrimping and crabbing industries, and now oysterers are every where too soon to do the same thing. The worst part about regs

First of all, I don’t think that the commercial industry “owns” the resource. I think we let them harvest from a public shared resource. They just happen to be holding the permit.
Secondly, if they were “stealing”, then the remaining 10 guys catch rates should go up. If their catch rates (and profit\sales) do NOT go up, then nothing was lost or gained from the people in this scandal. That being said, if the catch rate and\or profit DO increase, then you could make a legitimate argument that they were being stolen from. That is if you accept the premise that they “own” the resource to begin with.
I’m sorry you have problems with my definition of stealing, but if nothing is lost, then I have a hard time accusing people of theft. You cry like an infant when someone slams your business, but you feel free to slam other’s businesses at will. I guess that is what “entitlement” mentality does for you… Well, that and the thought that you can steal numbers too…
In this particular example, the law accuses them of stealing the resource. That’s fine with me. But to claim that they are “taking money from other’s in the industry”, that’s something that’s easy to quantify, if indeed it’s actually happening. The other guys should have banner years going forward. If their catch rates remain the exact same as they did in previous years, and their paycheck remains the same, then how can you say these other guys were “taking their money”
Glad you are happy. I hope the knowledge helps put more money back in your pocket that other guides are stealing from you.
