Illegal is illegal, and obviously these guys knew what they were doing. I had no clue the money in these things. So much for the dope game.

No kidding right! Hell the fines don’t even add up the money they are worth, if they actually got the money they can pay their fines and still be on top 150k…
EDIT; maybe not, it does say up to twice the value…ouch!

A commercial fishing friend said that these guys are big time crooks, and have been doing stuff like this in all aspects of the industry for YEARS…

Anybody one here know alleged perps?
I remember when Eels were worse than crabs and stingray as a by-catch that always aggravated me for getting in the way of catching good stuff. Son caught the first eel in the Coosaw Friday that I’ve seen in a bit. Maybe people like these pieces of trash are what’s causing that.

There is a TV show and a Guy that lives on the upper Delaware River catches full grown eels, smokes them and sells them for $30 a pound!
Who knew! And furthermore how would you even get in to something like this???

What makes me wonder is the by-catch. They would have to use an extremely fine mesh net that would catch every other water creature along with the baby eels.

Glad to see them prosecuted. Last summer I caught a croaker in the Wando and when I cleaned it there was an elver in its stomach. At the time I knew of them in Maine but not SC and researched it on the Internet. Interesting fishery, but it looks like it needs more limits in SC.
Skinnee would defend them if someone accused them of taking money from someone else in the industry.

Down here is where a signature goes but they can confuse and anger some people so I don’t have one.

Poachers don’t value the nature they plunder.
They value how much money it will put in their pocket!
I know all parties involved and they are not the career criminals you guys are trying to make them out to be. It’s strange how the same 10 people seem to get the permits for elvers every single year…
Also it is strange how they charged them for full-grown eel weight. That is why the dollar amount is so astronomical.
I hate to say this but our commercial permitting department at the Department of natural resources does not play fair. Same people get the Horshoe crab permits every year, same people get the eel permits every single year. Try to get a shellfish grant or commercial permit and it is like pulling teeth. Get a few individuals seem to get every single culture lease that opens up.

I’m not disagreeing with the fact that our commercial permitting department of DNR is not playing fair, but illegal is illegal. If they illegally harvested the elvers, just because they felt that it was unfair, doesn’t constitute it to be legal and ok.

I agree wrong is wrong, and yes they need to pay a penalty for breaking the law. But don’t over inflate the dollar amounts so your case looks like it is something huge. Narcotics units have done this for years with marijuana seedlings. They charge you for the amount of dope you would get off of full-size plants.

i agree with that. it does certainly sound like they’re trying to prove a point with those guys.
Serves them right, need to make an example out of them. Poaching and molesting wildlife should not be tolerated, no matter the species.

First of all, I don’t think that the commercial industry “owns” the resource. I think we let them harvest from a public shared resource. They just happen to be holding the permit.
Secondly, if they were “stealing”, then the remaining 10 guys catch rates should go up. If their catch rates (and profit\sales) do NOT go up, then nothing was lost or gained from the people in this scandal. That being said, if the catch rate and\or profit DO increase, then you could make a legitimate argument that they were being stolen from. That is if you accept the premise that they “own” the resource to begin with.
I’m sorry you have problems with my definition of stealing, but if nothing is lost, then I have a hard time accusing people of theft. You cry like an infant when someone slams your business, but you feel free to slam other’s businesses at will. I guess that is what “entitlement” mentality does for you… Well, that and the thought that you can steal numbers too…
In this particular example, the law accuses them of stealing the resource. That’s fine with me. But to claim that they are “taking money from other’s in the industry”, that’s something that’s easy to quantify, if indeed it’s actually happening. The other guys should have banner years going forward. If their catch rates remain the exact same as they did in previous years, and their paycheck remains the same, then how can you say these other guys were “taking their money”?
Are these things not able to be bred in captivity? I feel like I remember reading something about we don’t really know how they even spawn. (obviously we understand the general mechanics)
