Left the Toler’s dock at 4am with the intention to have lines in by sunrise. Mother nature had different plans. First 35 miles of the run in the dark were a breeze, last 20 got pretty nasty. Swell and chop stacked up heavily to 3ish ft, only a couple seconds or so apart. After continually hitting waves that cause the infamous shattering noise all boat owners dread for a few miles, we hit one hard enough that caused two of the rods in the t-top to fall out. One landed in the boat, the other in the water. D*mn. To our surprise we realized that the snap swivel to the one that went in the water was clipped to another reel. due to the fact that luckily, one of our guys clipped it to another reel down below when it came loose during the ride we were able to pull the entire 30wide spool in by hand to retrieve the rod. After knocking our rods (and teeth) loose we decided to cut the run short and start to troll in 180’ of water. Seas laid down before too long and the dolphin bite picked up! Lots of big bulls and lots of double hook ups. The hooked up fish and the friends they brought to the boat kept us busy. During one double hookup a third line went off right behind the squid chain. Sail! triple hookup for a few minutes until the sail spit the J hook- bummer, but at least we landed the other two fish. Shotty start to what ended up to be a solid day all in all!
fished south in 400-880 ft of water
ended with a total of 21 dolphin, mostly bulls and mostly gaffers
0/1 on sails
came across a large floating tree on the ride in. Wasn’t holding any fish but was able to hold 3 of our crew members.
