Any of you freshwater guys tried them in the Lakes? I’m going up the 1,000 Islands NY, area next month and am thinking that they would work on deep Lake Trout and such! Some of those areas will be over 200 feet!
Thought about trying some on Stripers in the Lakes once the season is open. Certainly worth a try on the lakers. It doesn’t take much to carry one up and give it an hour or two once the other spoons start catching.
Tried one a Clark Hill last week, a large saltwater one but it wore me out on the small rod I was using, next time I’m gona try a lighter one. Have caught lot of stripers and perch on 1/2 to 3/4 oz jigging spoons in the upstate lakes in the past, best luck in the winter tho!
Man Easy I’m jealous, the 1000 Islands are one of my favourite places to be. Are you musky fishing? I think October is the month to do it.
When I was up there the guide I talked to didn’t say much about lake trout, most of the fishing they do is in shallow water for bass and such.
Second that on the saltwater jigs. Given their weight, they will wear you out. I’m more of a spoon guy for deep jigging (in freshwater) and have used the Strike King Sexy spoons since they came out year ago. Great action without kicking your butt to work them…as long as you have the right setup. I like a 7’6" HVY rod and a high-speed (7.1:1 or faster) reel. I’ll use braided line for my main line (Power Pro 12/50) but use a 15-17lb fluorocarbon leader (about 18"-24" long) attached to the braid with a high-quality ball bearing swivel (minimizes line twists caused by the spoon’s action). If you’re getting a lot of bites but not hooking up, I attach a #6 trebles hook, with a split ring, to the top eye of the spoon.

Fishguy, I want Smallmouth and Walleye mostly! We are going to Wellesley Island State Park, NY. Rented a cabin up there! There are 4 of us going and taking 2 boats up. The cabin rent is only $109.00 per person for 4 days. Cabin has kitchen w/pot and pans/bath and sleeps 4. Park has a store/bait and tackle/ marina! I’ve been across the International Bridge a couple of times and always thought that it was a beautiful waterway and wanted to fish it. Pike are on the list but don’t know how to filet them. If I get into them, Chowder is on the menue! I’m talking Bucket List stuff here:wink:
Fried Pike sandwich is the jam!!! We used the “tenderloin” of the fillet because it has less bones. That said, Walleye is probably the best freshwater fish you’ll ever put in your mouth.

Easy, I’ve caught many a large Northern pike and had a local “try” to show me how to fillet one. Major waste of meat! What I finally started doing was scaling them score deeply, put in tin foil with butter salt, pepper and garlic powder and put on the grill. Enjoy a few brews and pull off the grill. Get a fork and pick through them a little at a time while picking out the million Y-bones. Best artificial I had was a Mepps algia, best live bait was a live minnow. After that we have caught the darn things with a piece of hot dog.
As for Bucket list, try some Muskie on the Lake of the Woods in upper Minnesota. aye. Also no shortage of monster northern pike.
The big spoons work on Murray and Clark Hill, for sure. Or atleast they did last month. I’ve been catching nice stripers, hybrids and largemouth with them. The spoon I’m using weighs 3 3/4 oz. and is a job to work. Main advantage is you don’t catch many small fish on it during “5 and done” on Murray. I’m using 17 lbs. fluorocarbon, swivel about 3’ above the spoon, and cutting and re-tieing fairly often.
spoon, where are you finding these spoons!

Keith,
Palmetto Angler now has the Ben Parker Spoons but they are a bit pricey there. They has some similar at Hunters Headquarters II.
