Buyers Broker?

I am interested in purchasing a boat listed by a broker, 8 hours away. Never tried to do a long distance purchase. Never dealt with a broker. Recently heard of the “buyers agent” concept.

This boat is < $35k. Is it possible to employ a buyers broker for guidance in this price range? Can anyone suggest a broker?

While “buyers agents” in real estate + other places are technically should be only beholden to your best interest, they all get paid when you sign the dotted line. Keep that in mind.

Conversely, there are lots of boat surveyors who can afford to be more impartial because they get paid once in advance, whether you buy the boat or not. Might be a bit more objective- and if they are qualified, they might offer a greater degree of inspection than you could hope for even in person.

A buyers agent may be able to help facilitate transport and documents though, I am not sure if surveyors will be able to do the same kind of work.

Hey Cbyte,
I agree with the surveyor route. Also, a mechanic certified in whatever style engine the boat has could take you a long way in the evaluation process. I bought a boat that was similarly far away two years ago after having a mechanic review the engine and take it on a water test (without me present). Just a little google research to find a mechanic in the boat’s region. I was very pleased with the process/results. Cost me about $200, you could probably get the seller to split the cost of something like that.

Survey and mechanic for sure. I thought broker could handle negotiations on price. From what I read it is common to set a price with contengencies for survey, mechanic and sea trial. I thought a broker might help me get more info before making that offer . . Site un seen. The whole process makes me uneasy

X4, marine surveyor is what you need.

I just finished negotiating a deal on a boat with a broker representing me. He started the negotiations lower than I would have done so, and ultimately at a price lower than I anticipated. He recommended a survey and mechanical inspection of the engines (I already intended to), but would not recommend one (wanted it to be independent). The contract signed took the boat off the market, but keeps my ability to walk away at anytime with no cost to me unless I actually purchase the boat. I am not finished with the process, but I have been highly impressed with the process so far. I am sure there are good and bad in all such scenarios, but so far this has been positive. Good luck with your purchase.
