Not sure how many people do this. But I was wondering what the standard running price for blue crab on the water was. Don’t really think they are supposed to sell to me but if I were to make a “charitable contribution” to their boat fund what’s the standard rate for blue crab?
I occasionally buy a few for bait from local crabbers on the water. Depending on their disposition, and your attitude , anywhere from free to $1-$2 each, or a couple of cold beers. Most will sell you a few.
Edit: I assume you are talking about bait and not an eating quantity?

Yes, I’m talking about bait quantities. I’m thinking 5 would be plenty.
Crosby’s on Folly Road has been selling peeler crabs for the past month or so. They are $1.50 each. We have bought a bunch for redfish and bonnethead sharks. You can get two baits out of each crab so .75 per cast… not bad when you are a fishin’ junkie.
I just payed $14 for a dozen from a guy in the Cooper(it was peeler season), but have paid as little as $5 a dozen. Depends on the season and the market price, it changes daily.
What I don’t use as bait from the dozen I eat or freeze, depending on if they are dead when the pot is boiling!
I don’t want to interrupt the crabbers work for just a couple of crabs so I get a dozen at a time. I have been known to by a few dozen if his price is right.
Penny may have some more insight on crabber etiquette, but they are usually very happy to sell out of their boat.

We offer $5 or $10, whatever cash I usually have on hand (isn’t usually much) for “a few crabs for fishing”. In return I have received between 5 and 12 crabs, and the number has not necessarily been based on money exchanged.

We typically hand them $5 and have to ask them to stop filling the bucket… they will give plenty for that price.
