Buying out of state

Has anyone on the forum bought a boat out of state? I’m looking at a used one in NC. Do you have to pay sales taxes in NC and SC? Do most out of state dealers know the proper procedures for getting it registered here? I did look on the dept of revenue’s website and I got the impression I would have to pay taxes on it here to get it registered, but maybe I’m misunderstanding it. Doesn’t seem like you would have to pay taxes in both states. What else is involved in getting it registered? All input greatly appreciated from this rookie

If buying from a dealer in NC they will charge you sales tax. If a private purchase you will pay sales tax when you register the boat with the bill of sale in SC.

But you still have to pay the “casual excise tax” (6% of price up to $300) in addition to the sales tax right?

Does CET apply to used boats? Ck it out!

Best bet, call DNR to get the info you need, they see to change the rules as they go.

Double D.

I bought my boat in Georgia and only had to pay SC taxes. Do your homework and get a bill of sale from DNR and one from the seller and make sure you get it notarized. I called DNR and checked the website and luckily got it right the first time. I have heard of people having to make multiple trips back and forth to get it done right.

There is a $300 cap on sales tax on a boat and motor combination but there is no cap if purchased individually. Dealers will collect sales tax when you purchase a boat from any state. SCDNR will see this when you register your boat and not charge you a sales tax.

Basically, SCDNR will only charge you a sale tax if there was not one charged when purchased out of state. Also, if you buy an outboard online that advertises ‘no sales tax’, you will get charged sales tax by SCDNR when you register.

Ok. Thanks y’all.

NC Taxes are higher and there is no cap like in SC. When I bought my Sea Hunt I had the NC dealer drive the boat to “South Of The Border” where we made the transaction. Thus is cost me only $300 in sale tax

In 2005, I bought a truck near Charlotte from a dealer. When we did the paperwork, they first charged me North Carolina taxes which were $1000 at the time. Then they realized that I lived in South Carolina and the truck would be registered here so they charged me our state maximum of $300. This was at Dale Jarrett Ford. Unless things have changed, it should be the same for a boat bought from a dealer. Private cash sales(with the emphasis on cash) are a different animal.

Has anyone also had to pay the “casual excise tax” in addition to the sales tax? The seem to be separate taxes/fees.

As a dealer, if the owner has an out of state drivers license, and is going to register the boat out of state, we do not charge sales tax.
i would imagine if you show the NC dealer your SC drivers license, you should not have to pay NC sales tax.
I havent ever heard of SC not charging sales tax if you paid in another state.
we do have a $300 cap when purchased together.
there isnt any other taxes to get a boat registered

If the deal is a cash deal(not financed) then you have to pay a title transfer fee.
