some buddies of mine are coming down from Wilmington the first week of march. we were looking to do some camping (somewhere one the water, island, etc) somewhere around Charleston or up towards bulls bay. was thinking capers or anywhere else yall might suggest. any advice is welcome
Capers is always a good time. Call up dnr and get the free permit ahead of time and you will be set
Make sure you anchor up accordingly or you can tie up to the dock off of the ICW I believe… Buddy got his boat high and dry one time
It’s really nice out there, I don’t think you will be disappointed

anyone else with any advice?
quote:Up towards Bulls/Capers = Capers Island. All other high ground is private or restricted. Get the Capers permit and enjoy the camping trip. Never heard any complaints.

Be very careful in Bulls Bay if you haven’t been there a lot of times. It can get really shallow really quick there. It is beautiful up there though. Have fun!

Yea I think well prob stay out of the bay for now unless someone who knows it better is going to camp with us. Thanks for the info though!
Try Otter Island off the South Edisto! Fishing is better in March and the bugs arn’t as bad as in the hot months. Watch the wind anywhere you go, could get interesting. Enjoy your self and be carefull!
The wife, dogs, and I come down several times a year. We stay in a cabin in the KOA on Mt Pleasant. We have always enjoyed our stay. The camper section is great as well.
Hope this helps.
Reserve America- Buck Hall-good if wind is bad or storm comes up…Camped there many times. Clean showers and great view and you can launch your boat at the camp ground. Get a Top Spot Map of BBay shows you where the fish are… it will show you the depths of water, creeks and locations…Worth the $25- the ICE house in Georgetown in front of the new McDonalds should have them but you can also get one online.
Biggest tip …if you have never been in the area the coast of SC gets ruff at 2:00pm. March is really cold in SC stick with the creeks watch the temps…good luck…burrr…fishing for fish sticks!

i appreciate all of the advice guys. we are not however looking to stay in a camp ground or KOA or anything where we might run into other people. is there anywhere that we would be able to leave gear for the day while we fish?

Contact SCDNR regarding camping in the Charleston area. There are places that even the locals don’t know about, and quite a few of them are free but require a permit. Camping on Capers Island in March can be a miserable experience if the wind is up, and there is always the question of your boat getting swamped, or beached, or worse. There are no facilities on Capers Is. Ask SCDNR about camping at the Old Santee Gun Club site on the South Santee river just north of Buck Hall campground. Requires a permit, and is very private with facilities including hot showers and toilets. You will not be disapointed.
