Camping/fly fishing in the upstate?

I want to take my family camping and do a little fly fishing the week before Easter in the upstate near walhalla. I’m still new to fly fishing so I could use any advice you can give me on where to fish and what flies to use. Also need some recommendations on a place to camp. We’ll be tent camping but would like a place with a bathhouse since the family will be tagging along. Don’t want to rough it too much or I might not get them to go back. Thanks

Oconee State Park.

Yes, Oconee State Park is a good option. The Chattooga is the obvious rec. It has a specially stocked and managed C&R section that will be happening then, if you’re into that kind of thing. I would privately mention another option for wild trout, if you were interested. The Chauga is also pretty close, but I’ve never fished it. If you like mountain trout fishing, that is nearly the best time of year to be there.

Take them to the Fish Hatchery. Fun, easy and the kids can worm fish if need be. Purple soft hackles and pink squirmie wormies will do the trick up there.

Declaring Jihad on fish, yours truely, Captain Ron

Great advice- perfect camping location. Plenty for your Wife and kids to do, great fishing for you. Check the guys here: http://www.chattoogariverflyshop.com

A few thoughts for you Lowcounrtygamecock, if you nymph fly fish use more weight than you think you should. If the fly ticks bottom you will get more strikes. Remember the white foam in the runs show you best trout lies. “Foam is Home” for trout. use 5x tippet as a start.
Go into the local fly shop, get fish reports, best flies, ask your how, where when to questions. When my kids were going to play/fish the streams I got them felt soled booties from Cabalas. Wet wading. Waders when they were over 10.Felt soles are a must.(or the new tech soles?)
Check out the Davidson River Campground/Brevard NC. Another family outdoor place.

Burrell’s Ford…

Thanks guys

Definitely Burrels Ford in Oconee, seems like 100% what you want. Can’t recommentld too much on FF up there though. At the hatchery for the kids, theurs a ton of trout but they’re smart (bring live bait) light spinning rods with Berkeley powerbait honeyworms are killer as well. We went 2 years ago in April and their was frost on the ground 2 out of 4 nights. Be prepared!
