My family is considering a spring camping trip to somewhere around Asheville. Can anyone recommend a camping spot thats not too rustic that has a good trout stream nearby? My boy and I want to try our hand at trout OTF for the first time. When I say not too rustic, I’m talking probably a campsite with restrooms. Thanks in advance!
If you can be 20 minutes out of Asheville. Look at Pisgah National Forest. There are nice field campsites around the fish hatchery. You can use the restrooms at the hatchery. You are only 10 minutes into the Forest therefore only 10 minutes to get out if you need Walmart etc.
The Davidson River is right there. The Davidson can get crowded downstream of the Hatchery. I don’t know the name of the river but it is on the otherside of the main road through Pisgah. Fish it up to the big waterfall. There are a bunch of wild brook and brown trout there.
Same here. I haven’t done much camping up there so I don’t know many places. I will tell you that some of the fish on the Davidson will be able to tell you where you bought your flies from. Try to get away from the best known places and you will find easier fish. Especially important for the first stab at it so you don’t get frustrated. Might want to call Hunter Banks (fly fishing store) in Asheville for more places to camp.
I ain’t as good as I once was, but I’m as good once, as I ever was.

If you are up to exploring of the beaten path. SC is right about the Davidson. Hunter Banks will help you out especially good places for family on Broad River.
A couple of books that helped me find some out of the way places are:
North Carolina Trout Fishing Maps by the NC Wildlife commission. If you want to borrow mine just email me.- This map helped me many times when I lived in the upstate.
Also Fly fishing NC or Southern Appalachains. The main rivers they talk about are good but the little fished feeder creeks are good to fish in. You can find many in the area to fish if you have the time.
If you want to come more my way, I live in Waynesville NC, you can camp at the Smokemont campground in the GSNP, you would be right on the Oconaluftee, which has great fishing, however if you are not accustomed to fishing in the park it can be very challenging. Not even 5 miles away is the Cherokee village offering some cool atractions for the kids. Plus they have just opened a new Catch & Release Flyfishing only trophy section on the Raven Fork which connects, downstream, with the Oconaluftee. I have fished the trophy section about 3 times and the fish in there are measured in pounds not inches! Really a lot like the D but the fish Like SC said won’t tell you where you got your flies! I put a web site for the campground on here and there are other camping opportunities in Cherokee as well. If you decide to fish this way there is a nice new shop here in Waynesville and you can go to Catallochee and fish and check out the Elk that are everywhere up there! Something cool about a Elk crossing a beautiful stream with you right there chasing native trout! Let me know if I can give you any more info!
Yea man, there is a ton of fishing up here, Let me know if you pick a spot and need some more info. If you stay near Cherokee, or Cataloochee you can always go hi the Tuckasegee as well, nice big tailwater with bid fish in it, more open casting wise than the other areas around here. Up here you learn to cast from all different angles, or you wind up catching more trees than fish!
For what it is worth, I was talking with a couple of DNR guys last night who are stationed in Upstate SC/WNC Trout restocking is “scheduled” for middle of march and april. I use “schedule” loosely because they don’t give exact dates.
