Hey guys,
My sister and and bro-in law were talking about doing a camping trip out at capers sometime in the near future…I’ve never been camping out there…just looking for some basic info. Where do most people set up shop so you’re not in the middle of the masses that are just there for the day. I was thinking on the ocean side? I heard I need a permit, I’ll secure that this week. Is there anything crucial I need to know before heading out? Making my checklist this week so I wont be forgetting too much once we hit the water…We’re shooting for middle of next week to head out for a few days. Thanks in advance!

It’s as primitive as it gets. Poop in a hole primitive. I usually go in Oct. We go on the Prices Inlet side. Bugs may be bad this time of year?
Its a great time. DNR has a page with a phone # to reserve.

I’ve camped there and it was a good time. Call dnr office on ji and they will email you the permit to camp. Print it off and you are good to go
Had good luck fishing the sandbar on the north end for reds and hooked up a monsta shark too.
Also sliced my foot wide open on oysters that trip but that is a different story
watch the weather, we got stuck in a terrible storm out there – nowhere to hide!
owned by trailer bearings…
Watch the weather. Watch the weather. Watch the weather. 12 years ago we had a trip we like to call “Capers Fear” We shuttled 30 people out to camp. One girl got sick and we took her back to the dock. North Easter blew in suddenly and weather was too bad to head back out so we stayed at a buddy’s on iop . Went back the next day and it looked like a bomb had gone off in the campsite. My tent was gone, we had to retrieve the other boats out of the marsh (bring the big anchor) and all the campers looked like refugees. Luck no one got hurt and boats didn’t sink but I know that it ended “camping” for a few people. Smores in 50 mph winds…good fun.
Our tradition is that of the first man who sneaked away to the creek when the tribe did not really need fish.
Call to get a permit, it’s free. bring plenty of fire wood, your not suppose to burn anything from the island.
Don’t forget the TP and bring plenty of beer.
As an added precaution you may want to hunt down some really good bug spray. Cutter makes this little bottle of stuff that’s 98% deet. It may take some time off your golden years but sure it beats the no see ums and mosquitos!
