Can gas be tested to see if it is bad?

It is a 225. The year is a 2001 or 2002 (I can’t remember, the boat is one year and the motor is the other).

Water Jacket corrosion. You need to go visit your friendly neighborhood Yamaha tech.

Check your engine’s VST filter - they get clogged and cause all kinds of problems.

It can be cleaned - or replaced ($20-$50?).
Google it: http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&hs=hGC&q=yamaha%2Bf225%2Bvst%2Bfilter%2B2001%2BOR%2B2002

Change it (not sure if this is 4-stroke): http://webpages.charter.net/stephens65/yamaha/8.html

Fishb8 check the other filters first, but I got a hunch that your engine is overheating and the alarm isn’t working. Search F225 Yamaha and you’ll learn all about it.

The engine will speed up and slow down when the throttle is about 3/4. If I move it back and forth is sometimes surges forward. If it was overheating, wouldn’t it stay at low RPMs.

You need to ask Chris V. He’s the Yamaha tech on here, I’ve been out of that line of work since 2002. He’s in the know more than me on the newer engines.

I smelled the gas and it smelled nasty. But it is treated with Stabil, so I smelled the lawnmower gas (also treated)and it smelled the same.

How do I remove the engine filter?

I checked the plugs. all looked like this:

But the #1 plug looked like this:

yes
if it was overheating and going into rpm reduction it would be less than 2000rpm constant

Sounds like the vst filter to me.If you have never had it cleaned, then it is time to anyway.my F115 did the EXACT same thing til I got the vst cleaned out.

On the plastic engine fuel filter, if you can’t get the black plastic nut to go back on due to the swelling effect of ethanol one can put the clear plastic bowl and nut in a freezer for a hour or so and then it will fit right back on. Or one can replace. It’s very easy to cross thread it when it is all swollen up.
