Can I get a little help with sailflow?

My question pertains to the seconds of a wave. Say you have 3ft @ 7 seconds. Is the 7 the duration of the wave or 7 seconds apart?

One wave ends where another begins, so the answer is ‘both’. That being said, I believe the measurement is crest to crest.

Thank you sir. Your information is appreciated.

Typically moderate to inexperienced captains will underestimate the wave height of a long interval and overestimate the wave height of a short interval. For example, if you had something like 4’ @ 8-9 seconds (nice long swell), you might guess you are in 3 footers. But, on a day that’s 3-4’ @ 5-6 seconds (ugly windblown chop), people will get the snot pounded out of them and swear they were in 5-6 footers. Typically the wave interval will be the prominent factor in determining how rough it will be.

Good info here. Please expound more on wave height and interval.

Agree with skinnee, good explanation. Next you will need an explanation of “significant wave”
