is it possible to have a antenna that’s too good? I have a icom 304 with a 14 foot shakespeare. I get lots of noise (pieces of conversation from everywhere)to the point that I have to turn up the squelch till the radio is almost useless. I tried channel 27 for a radio check and it sounds good. Just wondering if the stick is too much for the radio. I used to have a 8 footer and don’t recall having this problem.
It might just be a bad connection in your system. You can do a continuity test on the coax and antenna connections. Best would be to find someone to do an SWR check on the Radio/Antenna. (Most HAM operators have a meter to do one.) That will confirm the Antenna and COAX Connections as well as impedance match between the Radio/Antenna/Coax. Local Amateur Radio Club will probably point you in the right direction.

Its not the antenna, well it is. Your just picking up more because of the extra 4 ft. I’m at 200+ ft on the high site, I hear Va Beach pilots at Rudee Inlet to Sector Miami…try going to low wattage on the hi-lo OR shifting the lo-dx…this should quiet it down. Just go back to reach out to someone.
