Can you fiberglass over the top of marine filler?

I have a hole in one of the lifting strakes on the bottom of my boat. I bought some marine filler and some gel coat from west marine. Was thinking of filling the hole and then fiberglassing over the cured filler. Then sanding and gel coating. Does anyone know of a better way to do this? I can only get to it from the outside. I want to fix it the right way.

What kind of filler is it? If Marine Tex, yes you can glass over it. I would use an epoxy based filler, and epoxy resin. A couple 3 layers of 12 ounce biaxial cloth.

The only problem is gel coat is a polyester and doesn’t always cure right over some epoxies. Epoxy does better with paint.

How large is the hole? Can you post a picture of it? I’ve fixed a LOT of holes in boats:smiley:

Not the best pic but it’s the only one I have right now

That’s not too bad. Grind out everything cracked or loose, fill with a structural epoxy filler, then a couple layers of glass over it.
