Cancelled trip turns into a tug o war

Saturday I was supposed to go out on someone else’s boat. I’ve never been far enough to really target grouper.
That got scrubbed with boat issues.
I’m not going to let that hold me back, so I went the easy route to test my tackle.

I ended up going out on my own and found some reef donkeys. I boated about 10 and broke off, bent/broke hooks on at least 10 more.
My goal was to put my new Fin-nor lethal 100 to the test. Rod is an Ugly Stik jigging stick-80lb power pro and lots of drag. This was my first experience with AJ’s other than a small one early in the year.
Here’s a short video.

How far off were you?

That actually sounds like fun.

Some people fish to fill the cooler but there isn’t much more of an adrenaline rush then fighting large aj. If fishing for a thrill I enjoy throwing poppers for them. The explosions are unmatched by any fish I have ever hooked!

A hot pink tube lure drives them crazy also.

it’s a blast. I like the fight more than the full freezer.
Besides, if it was about filling a freezer, no one would target Tarpon.

I was about 16-18 miles out.
