Cancun Fishing Trip

Realize this is not a local post but thought I would pass on that we just returned from Cancun for a wedding and 6 of us rented a boat for offshore. We went 4 for 5 on Sailfish, with 2 going over 100 lbs and also caught 6 bonita. We would have caught more but it took a couple of my compadres too ■■■■ long to reel in the sails and ate into our fishing time (6 hours - 1 out, 1 back and 4 fishing). I think the trip ran like $120 person so all in all a pretty good deal.

I would certainly do it again and recommend for anyone else if they are ever in the Cancun Area.

Fished a boat called Happy Hour, 38 feet. A couple of us had several happy hours and two of them had unhappy 6 hours because they were seasick the whole time. Anyway more beer and fishing for the rest of us.

Nothing wrong with that…

Nice report and a good price too.

I’m back and I’ve promised to behave this time.

Was this out of marina? or over at Isla Mujeres? I’m looking for some charter boats there and usually stay on the strip.

Thanks.

2 100+ lb sailfish?

must be a record.

How big do they get in Mexico?

They are still atlantic sails, 23, agreed if they where a 100lbs that would be something. Pacfic sails grow a whole lot bigger than Atlantic.

Congrats on 4-5 thats a real good ratio in a short amount of time. Sucks when everyone doesnt enjoy it but that place can be really rough.

live bait or dead?

The marina was in Cancun or just on the other side of the main strip.
We fished a boat called Happy Hours, capt. Mich and his mate Franklin,
there names were probably really like Miguel and Francisco or something but anyway they knew what they were doing, spoke very little English but could put us on some fish. We saw several other boats catching sails as well but most of them when we got back said they had like 2 sails and a couple of bonito.

All fish were caught on live bait. They said they were sardines. They would jig them like 5-6 at a time. We would drift extremely slow and it seems that every sail hit the outriggers drifting on the sides of the boat and the bonitos hit behind the boat.

The two sails that I referenced went 100 lbs, both were over 100 inches. They were trying to get us to mount both of them but my wife and friend both asked to release them. The other two were much smaller like 70 - 75 inch range.

It was extremely rough; however there were probably a dozen or so boats fishing the main area. Bait and birds everywhere.

Here is the info where we booked our trip. I would recommend the trip to anyone if their in the Cancun Area. It was certainly by far the best trip I’ve been on.

No offense intended, but those are the boats that will pull into a pod and throw live baits right in the middle of your spread. Or just run over your spread because you are an American boat who does not belong there and those fish are theirs. Next time, find an American boat in Isla. 50 pesos for the ferry at grand puerta. Shouldn’t be hard to find one on short notice. and I promise the captain won’t try to sell you a friggin sailfish mount.

commissions on a fish mount, no say it aint so… cant believe they wanted you to buy a piece of plastic

They do:smiley:

No way no how on the 2 100lb atlantic sails, and they try to get everyone to mount everything. Any pics?

Nice Phush

baycreek, Sounds like a great time. Would you please share some pics of the fish you caught? I’d reely love to see’m. Thanks

I didn’t catch any of the sails.

My wife caught one and a buddy caught one.

The only picture I have is my wife holding one and I’m not about to post that on here because I’ll get a thousand replies on here about the heck with posting the fish…keep posting your wife on here…

I’ve been on here too many time to see the wife and girlfriend comments.

Wow, i checked out the site and those guys do a bang up job catching fish. Here’s some of their work. Very impressive!

I could use some advice from your wife as how to handle a 100 lb sail for a pic in the rough conditions you’ve described. it usually take 2 200lb guys to handle 75-80lb sails in rough conditions.

Can you help a brother just trying to figure this offshore thing out with some helpful hints?

4 for 5 on sails is a good day, especially with only 4 hrs to fish and half a crew…

now he’s saying they only caught 2 & no pics ??? or maybe doesn’t know what “4 for 5 on sailfish” means? Hell, looks like they tear up the Wacudas though or are they Cudawhooos:smiley: I’m sure it was a good time:wink:

Be very careful getting a fish mounted in Mexico. I had a sailfish mounted in Acapulco. Had to pay an extra $300 in shipping, then finally had to get a hispanic lawyer to write them a letter. Mount arrived after nine months, 9 inches shorter than the one I caught. Meaure it and go to King Sailfish mounts.
