Took a trip while on vacation with cancunflyfishing.com out of Isla Blanca(a bit north of Cancun). Caught my first tarpon OTF and it was quit amazing. Hooked 5 but only got one to the boat for a picture. I am relatively new to the fly rod but was able to get the fly where it needed to be several times, the guide made me feel better as he says they can be very difficult to bring to the boat. It got super windy and that made his job of polling really difficult and mine of casting really frustrating. He was very patient and gave me some amazing pointers for windy conditions. I will be putting down the spinning gear for a while and try to master (if thats possible) the fly!
Ready to go back this summer for the bonefish, permit and snook!
Really difficult to try and keep stripping them in when your brain is telling you to crank the handle on the reel!!! I for sure understand the “bow to the king” saying now!
Calsmith1990, Practice practice practice, a little more practice with a bit of practice! Don’t just mess around with it on calm wind days, get out there in 10-15+ winds in all directions, cast into the wind, with it at your back, crosswinds…any scenario you could find yourself in out on the water.
If your gonna pay a guide to put you on fish on the flats in crystal clear water, get your $$$ worth by being quick and accurate. His hours up there on the platform make it worth it for him as well when you catch fish!
Congrats on your new rod, don’t be scared to ask for help or attend one of the fly casting seminars at Haddrells (Simon is an okay guy!!!) or Charleston angler. I went to the Orvis school down near Beaufort and got the foundation and fundamentals.
I keep my practice up on the boat every trip and at James Island County Park and have managed a handful of bass out there!
I’m FAR FAR from considering myself good at it but will pass on any and all the tips I have picked up along the way.
EJS - I’m heading to Cancun in April for a wedding, was thinking of booking a fishing trip while there but not OTF (one of these days!). Would appreciate any guide recommendations.
