Thanks gw but the bamboo cane that grows around here is not the same species of cane used for fishing poles. It’s not as strong as the cane grown in tropical climates.

SMAN - West Marine on Savannah Hwy had some not long ago. Think they stock them or can order them as needed.

I knew a guy in Cairo GA that made grew cane (bamboo) fishing poles. It looked like ordinary bamboo like most of what grows around here. He cut it down green at a certain thickness , trimmed it and hung it upside down to dry. He lacquered them and let them dry again. The expensive ones were $2.00 because they had an eye on the tip wrapped with red thread. The really high dollar ones had the eye and were 2 piece with a brass ferrule for $ 4.00. I bet those poles caught a lot of fish!

GROWING UP IN THE 50s DAD WOULD CUT THE SIZES HE WANTED BY THE DOZENS ; DE-LIMB THEM ; BUNDLE THEM ALTERNATELY AND TIE THE BUNDLES TIGHT AND HANG THE BUNDLES NEXT TO ROOF IN BARN FOR WEEKS UNTIL COMPLETLY CURED ; SAND THE LIMB KNOTS , VARNISH A COUPLE COATS AND WAS GOOD TO GO FISHING… THEY WERE ALL WE HAD FOR YEARS AND CAUGHT TONS OF FISH WITH THEM…:smiley::smiley::smiley::smiley::smiley::smiley::smiley:

SMAN, not sure on variety, but if you travel out on hwy 17 through Hendersonville right were Black Creek Road turns off there is some HUGE bamboo (20-30’). It’s not native and strong as all get out. I’ve used some for Catfish poles jabbed into the bank of the Combahee. I made dad a couple of long poles and a short one. Hung them under the shed and tied a brick to em to keep straight while curing. Again strong as all get out. Not sure whos land it is but the Hwy dept has a time keeping it at bay close to the road.

Wouldn’t want a 2’ one like Off the Chains Mom had on my backside.

Sure,I’ve caught fish on willow limbs and all kinds of inferior bamboo but I’m searching for a higher quality bamboo such as Calcutta cane.It won’t break when you get a big one on and last a long time. I guess I’m a bamboo snob.haha .Search Calcutta bamboo and you’ll see what I’m talking about.

Sometimes it is easier to just say thank you and move on when asking questions on the internets! Just sayin.

OK - I did some research - The Calcutta bamboo is from - well - Calcutta India. It has a darker bluish green and its not completely hollow between the joints like what we typically find here, Sometimes it is completely solid. It is very strong and actually used in construction in India. I cant find any mention of its cultivation or any wild growth in the USA.
