Thinking about pulling the trigger…anyone have an experience with this lens?
Debating between this and the 17-55mm f2.8 for my next purchase… Not L glass but image quality its reportedly just as good.
Appreciate any help and reasons for one over the other.

If you put down the money for the 2.8L you will not be disappointed and it will be youR “all-around” lens. If you don’t want to spend that much money, do a little research on the Tamron 28-70 f/2.8.

A lot has been written on this lens and it compares almost identical to the L but at a quarter of the price.
I don’t know what to think of a 17-55 with a imagine stabilizer on it. If you’re going to do landscape photography with a wide angle lens you’re going to be using you tripod.
Just my thoughts.
Honestly most of my stuff is either action during daylight hours, which would be a little nice to have IS, or nighttime and tripod use. My 300 has IS, but I’ve tried action shooting with it on and off. Most speeds that I shoot are faster (1/500th or faster) and I can’t tell a difference at that speed in my images. Slower shutters I can certainly tell, but that’s not my norm. That’s why the IS isn’t all that important to me for a walk around lens.
At 70mm, I should be ok until I get below 1/100th I would think…until the camera shake becomes an issue.

Get the 24-70mm for your all-around lens, a 50mm 1.4 (or 1.2 for 1k more) for all your “portrait/single object” stuff, and the 70-200L for images where you need a little reach.
(I could never do this) but if you want to take taking weddings or individual portraits… get you a 85mm.
If you ever end up on the sidelines, get that 2nd mortgage and get a 400mm.
Pretty much all you will ever need.
Apparently, the Mark III will be announced in the next 3 months. I will be first in line, front and center.
5D Mark III Announcement
Barring another manufacturing problem in Asia, count on the 5D Mark III being announced around the end of March or early April 2012.
Availability will probably happen before the summer begins in 2012. No specs were given at this time. This is a very solid [CR2]
The NAB show is April 14-19 in Las Vegas.

Is that the new one that shoots 14fps?
The 24-70 should be here by thursday…can’t wait.

It shoots around 8-9 but Canon has made a big move to ISO rather than FPS and Megapixel. I reely* want to get into the video aspect of DSLR. The things they’re doing now are incredible… Heck, the season finale of House (TV) was shot on the/this new Canon.
I’m gonna try to say this delicately… but you have just taken a step that you will never recover. Once you get that lens on your camera and get the feel of a “L” lens… you will never want to put a non-L lens on your camera again.
You can’t go wrong with either choice, but I’d go with Canon all the way.
