Now is the time to hit em in the ACE Basin. Then again in January.

A buddy of mine caught a 35 pounder in the ACE last week. I’m gonna hit it pretty soon myself.

what general area do you fish down there?in the cooper i fish around the opening to shipyard creek, mark clark bridge, and some other areas along banks where i seem to see them every year.also along the “concrete wall” willy

Willy ~ go ahead and add me to you’re stripper fishing buddy list as well . I’ve only been stipper fishing once up on the Outerbanks of N.C. and I only caught one while I was there, but man that fish had alot of fight in him. I’d love to head out and target them S.O.B.'s again.

what type of lures do you use to catch strippers?

strippers? or stripers? lol

dollar bills work well. But you will get more with a twenty

that was a good clean answer sir.some would have come up with a:imp:answer. lol

I’m pretty sure we both meant striper fishing, but speaking for myself, I find stripper fishing to be alot of fun as well:imp:[:I]

I meant stripers, sorry i am unable to spell good. Do you use top water or jerk baits?

I dont know about the saltwater stripers but on Lake murray they like striper delights and on the saluda I did well long A Bombers.

no topwater, you have to fish down in the water column mostly.it depends on where you find them.i have caught them on mullet that i put back for winter in the freezer.i fish that deep obviously.i fish deep divers along drop-offs if i find them in a spot where that will work.if im fishin a bridge,i will drop a big jig(butterbean) down deep and hope if they hit it i can get them clear of the pilings.it really depends on where they are.i have a lure i bought off of ebay that gave me the banner day last year.up north it is a trout lure, but i got into em last winter here and caught 13 in 45 minutes.(all released of course).this was when we found them shallow on a high tide in close to a particular bank.the lure looks like a grub with christmas tinsle tied to it.also i have had success with a 10 inch eel fished deep.hope this answered your question.hope to go to ace basin this year more.only got there one time last year.caught 6 in 1 hour fishin with guy that fishes there every year in january.better have good winter gear.it was cold, but worth it.:stuck_out_tongue:

About how big do they get?

i can tell you 20lbs isnt out of the question.and i have hooked bigger…

Sorry for asking all these questions but about how deep in the water column are they? Can you see them on the fish finder? Do they school up like reds and trout?

it varies like all fish.but yes you can see them visually at times and if youre good with the right depth finder you can find them that way also.they tend to be in certain areas throughout the winter.i have been fishin with guys that saw them schooling that didnt know what they were seeing until they were told what they were lookin at.
if you can catch them schooling along a bank or suspended in deep water this is the best case for catchin them.please practice catch, photo, release with them if youre lucky enough to find and catch one.:sunglasses:

I dont ever keep fish unless its trout. So i take it that they are hard to catch.
