I’m not sure about up the river but I’ve caught them just off the beach every where from Wrightsville Beach to Cape Look Out. They often catch Cobia off the piers in Topsail Beach and Surf City. Lived in Topsail Beach for 7 years. Near shore fishing is tremendously better than down here. The Lowcountry drum fishery is hard to beat though.

Gotcha. I’m staying wrightsville this weekend. Been fishing there all my life but never had much luck bc the red drum are few and far between. I’ve seen the Cobia at one of the three bouys at the mouth of masonboro inlet. Wonder if they are at that close reef

can you swim 5 miles? “NO” then what is the difference in 5 miles and 50 miles!!! Go for it!
They should be. Menhaden are starting to show up dependably from speaking with some of my buddies. The drum fishing is better in the fall and WB is the toughest place around that area to catch them due to all of the traffic. If you’re taking your boat, head down behind Figure 8 or behind Lea Island. I’ve caught some trophy fish there but you have to work for them. The water is far more clear. The Spanish bite has been on fire recently though. Should be able to catch a mess of 'em off the Johnny Mercer if you don’t take your boat.

yeah run some clark spoons on planers and daisy chains with spoons off of 2oz trolling weights. You’ll pick up a some fish if they’re there. I’m sure you know, but if you find a big school of spanish just circle them and catch fish. nothing more frustrating than someone running through the middle and sending them deep. Good luck.
