Cape Romain Lighthouse

We are planning on putting in at Buck Hall Landing and venturing out to see the lighthouses at Cape Romain. I have a TopSpot map of the area, but it still looks like there is no clear cut way, so I’m asking for some guidance. How far north on the ICW do I go before turning east?.. We’ll be in a 23’ Center Console.
thanks in advance.

Don’t know how to do it, but, I’d do it on a dead low tide. Nowhere to go but up.

its a tricky place out there if you dont know where you are going so be careful. next big creek past five fathoms will also take you out to the cowpen/muddy bay area…but watch your water…and try to go when tide is up or you will be sitting a spell. theres a little bit of a makeshift walk area out front…wear some light weight long pants as the grass/brush and sthickers are pretty tough…as are the mosquitoes at times and snakes… there are tours that occasionally run out there by the folks who do the bulls island tours…and it may even be opened for those…but you cant go up in it. history of the two lighthouses are pretty cool.

If I were going there I’d go down Five Fathoms and turn left up Santee Path Creek, then bear to the right coming out of the mouth at the other end of the creek. I think there is plenty of good water all the way to the turn into the back end of Key Inlet on that route. Key Inlet has good water too and you can get right up to the beach if you’re careful. If you don’t turn into Key Inlet and want to keep heading around the island towards the lighthouse, I think you have to stay over close to the island because if I recall correctly it shoals out big time through there. I’m pretty sure that Santee Path Creek then on through to the back end of Key Inlet is a pretty easy path, but the waters on the west side of the island are a tougher go. When in doubt follow the crab floats.

The pictures that Pen posts are going to be a better experience.

Thanks for the info mcvl and pen…
We ended up Taking 5 fathom to santee path, to key inlet.Just like Mcvl suggested. Also went to the north end of the island by hugging the inside… Plenty of water for a 23 Mako to do it. Was able to keep the boat on plane the entire ride back with no worries. In fact, there was another boat out there that drafts much deeper than mine.
We are saving the walk up to the lighthouse for the next trip.

Anyway, what an awesome place to get away from it all!!!

Glad to hear that all went well. Key Inlet is one of my top 5 favorite places in the world.

That’s why no matter where I am…when I close my eyes and think of “home” that’s where I am.
