Are you talking about R8? That seems shallow for a sail.

Fish-n-Kid

I fish alot more than you.

Freshwater is for drinking.

fishnkid, I heard about a guy catching sails at the 4KI last month and plenty reports on here of people seeing sails in water around 50 ft. and capers (r8) is right around 50 feet

Harry Sea. Thats how I roll.

Youll must be thinking of r6 not r8 thats by the deli but there were a few sails caught at the needle this year.

R8 is 8 miles off Dewees.
You didn’t see know sail unless it was sick.

OVER BUDGET

(No) sail unless it was sick.

OVER BUDGET

8 miles isn’t “offshore”. The real R8 in terms of “offshore” is 60 miles off South Beach, Hilton Head. Approx. 150’ of water, big Navy tower not a little buoy.

I believe a sail at Capers. We caught one in 50’ of water year before last trolling for kings. Old timers talk about seeing them at the end of the jetties back in the day.

fisherguy, check out the reefs under the library on this site, R8 for the boys fishin out of charleston is actually the capers reef.

Harry Sea. Thats how I roll.

YEA I didnt belive it at frist but sure enough it was . It wasnt that big but I was doing every thing to try and get it to hit something in the spread but he just wasnt taking the game.Wanted one of those famous take out of the water pics[just kidding].about pics I know better.

8 miles isn't "offshore

Here we go again. 8 miles IS offshore. It is 8 miles off the shoreline of our beautiful coast. No it is not GulfStream, but it is 8 miles offshore. Websters defines “offshore” as 1. moving away from the shore. 2. at some distance from the shore. Last time I checked the shore was still where it has always been, right where the water meets the land. GO FISH did not try to deceive anyone into thinking he was 60 miles offshore, he specifically stated 8 miles. Most of us refer to the reefs in that location as “Nearshore Reefs”, but they are still offshore.
Good Post and I believe you saw a sail.

i agree - in nautical terms it’s nearshore. nautical terms are meant to define distances from land general terms.

in websters terms i suppose if you take the kids to the beach you can say you took them offshore as long as you stepped in the water?

So where does nearshoe end and offshore begin?

Last night I lay in bed looking up at the stars in the sky and I thought to myself, where the heck is the ceiling?

i believe its 20 nautical miles, i forget exactly, but it aint just past the breakers

Until there is a “Nearshore Reports” option (which I think would further confuse and cause needless, multi-page, nit-picky threads)–This report belongs here as it certainly is not “Inshore”. Case closed!

i dont think anyone said it didnt belong here. it was just the term thats being debated.

typically, rookies call nearshore, offshore.

doesnt the marine wx broadcast call it nearshore out to 20 or 40 miles, then term it offshore after 40 miles, or at the ledge or something?

The HH/Beaufort boys read the “Offshore” thread and occasionally post there. R8 as I noted previously, to us, is the navy tower. I am not debating the sailfish claim at all, just a misunderstanding/need for clarification on the “R8” location. In the absence of a “Nearshore” thread, I agree that 8 miles is “offshore” not “inshore”. But 8 miles, if we are debating that, is not “offshore” to “offshore” fisherman. The “Offshore Waters” forecast by NOAA is from 60-250 miles. But who gives a shat, go fish and keep posting.

We’ve seen a few sails that shallow over the years.

I used to know a guy that claims to have caught one right outside the stono inlet late in the summer. Thats pretty crazy, but he swore it was true.

I think I might of seen a sail in the wando last week, but I am not sure, the water was a little murky

Harry Sea. Thats how I roll.

If you fish offshore - R8 is on the way to the Deli in 150 feet of water.

Several weeks ago a guy in NC caught a sail in an aluminum jon boat a couple of miles from the shore. It was posted on this website.
Lots of them have been caught caught at the Edisto 60 in 55 feet of water.
