Capers Full Weekend April 25??

Wow! called inquiring about a permit for this weekend. No go! 98 permits assigned and the supposed maximum permits or campers allowed is 80. Are these numbers correct / actual campers? I went 4/11 and was told that I was one of the last to receive a permit for the island was at its maximum of 80. I’ll be darned if I saw 80 camp sites set up out there. Not necessarily looking for a response, just saying.

I’ve been running several groups of Boy Scouts out to the island on Friday’s and picking them up on Sunday recently. That could be whats going on. The group I’m taking this weekend is supposed to only be 5 people.

Lordy, but the cat is out of the bag. Too bad, so sad. Glad I was around when it stayed deserted, natural, and undisturbed.

Is there anywhere else it’s legal to camp?

In the Fall, the outdoor gear company REI has a huge kayak event that they advertise nationally and have folks from all over the country camping there on the north end, probably 50-60 ppl.

It is not 80 permits, it is 80 people total allowed on the island. When you get a permit, they ask you how many people. They are doing you a favor by not having any permits this weekend. This time of the year you will get carried away by the bugs. In my opinion, there are only a couple weeks that I would camp at Capers taking the bugs and temp into consideration. The bugs can be relentless out there.

Spot on with the bugs. A group last year was supposed to stay Fri-Sunday and ended up calling the marina and begging someone to come get them Saturday just after the sun rose. They thought they were going to die at one point, some spent most of the night partially submerged in the water, good thing the sharks were not hungry.

I took some folks over there from out of town on Saturday. I was shocked at how many folks were there camping. There was a huge pontoon boat bringing people there to walk the beach as well. That whole IOP, Dewees, Capers area is crowded.

I also went on 4/11 and I was the last to get a permit. My crew made #80 so they said. I only saw a few campers on the island, but the campers could have been carried away by the gnats!!

Nothing makes a fish bigger than almost being caught.
