Capers Island

I am going on a camping trip to Capers Island in April. Does anyone know what is a good landing to put in at and closer to the island.

IOP

Garris

SeaPro 21 Bay Yam 150
High Tide 16 Honda 40
Key West 17’ Stealth Yam 115

Be careful with Garris…they have a gate that will lock you in or out depending on which side of it you are on when its closes. Can’t imagine it would be too much fun to get locked in there. IOP is 24/7.

How far is Capers from IOP, and how long will it take to get there?

I was going to be a smart a$$ and say, “look at a map” but, first, I did look at a map and noticed that the islands are mislabeled. The map that is linked off of the resources column on this web site has Capers labeled as Bull Island, Bulls is called Cape Romaine NWR Island, etc…

Oh well. Still, get a map! A better one than is on this site.

Actually, I’m serious and your best bet is probably to put in at IOP marina. That’s about as close as you can get as a starting place, safely.

Well smart ass i did look at the map thats why i posted this to ask the question i did ask.

iFly you don’t have to be a smart ass. When you look at a map or Google Earth it’s hard to tell which landings are kayak friendly. Gadsdenville is probably the closest from what I can tell but I’ve been told that at low tide it’s just pluff mud. IOP marina is about 6 miles away and on the intercoastal. Has anyone ever left from Gadsdenville and can vouch if it’s good or not?

Gadsenville at dead low has you dragging your yak through about 1/4 mile of pluff mud. Great put in any time other than dead low.

There is nothing - absolutely nothing- half so much worth doing as simply messing about in boats. Kenneth Grahame

ryan, Gadsenville isn’t the best place to put in at low tide…it isn’t pluff mud, but a hard sandy bottom. Just means you have to drag your yak until you find a enough water to start paddling. As far as parking there over night…I woundn’t do it!.

Mud

go on the coastal expedition website for Bulls island ferry and there is a phone # for a lady that lets you park in her yard for 20$. Launch at Moores ldg., if you are camping on the north side of island. South side, you might want someone to drop you off at Gadsdenville ldg… and pick you up. Don’t leave you vehicle there.

Thanks cut everybody for your help

As far as time wise it depends on how fast you paddle.I think I measured it at about 4 miles from Moores to the N end And about 3.5 miles from IOP to the S end. Takes me abou 10-15min in a Jonboat from Moores. And it’s abou 1mile from the Ladys house to moores for parking.

Sure would like to plan a camp trip with a group of ya’ll this Spring to Capers. We could yak-fish, surf-fish, flats for reds on hightide.

When you want to go?

early May…

This sounds good. I have never kayaked over there.Should be interesting.

We’ve paddled out there a few times. We always put in at Gadsdenville. There’s a man that lives at the end of the road that will let you park there overnight for a few bucks (at least he let us do it).

Warning: make sure you check the tides on the way back. We changed out plans and decided to come back a little early, but forgot about the low tide up that creek. NO water, so we had to drag our canoe 1/4 mile through the mud. It was HEAVY. Not fun. Bad ending to a good trip :frowning:
