Capers Island

I’m going to be doing a camping trip out to capers on the 25-27 of March. I need some help on some good spots in the creeks that would hold some reds or trout. Staying on the side adjacent to Dewees Island so the creeks closest to there or even some on Dewees would be ideal.

Also if anyone could help on surf fishing locations that would be awesome.

Thanks,
Troy

Dear Surfer…You’re probably a little early to have success in the surf. Water temp. and daylight hours(hours of sunlight)determine the cycle of life for most fish that move offshore in the winter. They move to a depth where the temp. remains fairly constant, and they sort of act like hibernating bears until the seasonal adjustment triggers them to move back inshore to feed aggressively. I look for water temps above 60 degrees before I venture out to the surf. The cycle usually starts to peak in early April in this area. That being said you want sloughs and cuts that offer a natural funnel to shallow feeding in the surf. Look for them at low tide as they change and morph every year with strong tides and storms. Learn to read the surf based on where waves crest and break as the area in front usually provides a good slough. If you locate a beach with fallen trees, stumps and rock groins, the scouring effect of the tide will create eddy’s and holes that will hold foraging fish. Fresh cut bait with a good oil content like mullet, menhaden, and bluefish give great scent for fish to trigger on, and blue crabs are a staple as well. These fish will come in on a building tide, and many times a ■■■■■ of birds will give visual clues on a hunting pack of hungry fish chasing bait pods in the surf. As a warning, don’t let a rising tide cut you off from a route back to your boat, or camp ground. 65 degree water will induce hypothermia quickly! Good luck.

if you can get in it try the creek on the south end closest to the beach
