Friends
I hope you all had a Merry Christmas and a joyous and relaxing Holiday season.
I’ve been out to the Capers Reef once, and I’m looking to make it a regular stop during the winter. I usually launch from Remleys, but was looking to shave some time off the trip out to Capers.
Can any of you more experienced members answer a few questions?
- Would launching out of IOP or Buck Hall be better?
- The maps I have show the inlet between Capers and DeWeese to be shallow at several locations. Is this a dangerous pass? What is the best way to get out to the reef from IOP or Buck Hall.
Thanks for any responses.
There was another post asking roughly the same question very recently it is titled Buck Hall to Capers reef?. I believe quite a few people prefer to go to IOP Marina and go out through Dewee’s Inlet. I have launch from Buck Hall and went out through Price Inlet once and it was definitely a white knuckle experience for me. I have a Seafox 209 Commander and I was taking waves over the bow, but I had also picked a really bad day to attempt going out. I am not sure about Dewees or Capers inlets, but Price inlet I believe the shallowest I seen was somewhere around 4ft with big waves picking us up and dropping us.

IOP marina and Deweese Inlet is the shortest route by far, and big boats use it regularly. Generally you go through the inlet, turn south and go parallel to the beach some distance before turning out. I am not personally familiar with it, but maybe Fritz or others will comment. That will be much shorter than the alternatives, And I don’t think Buck Hall or Garris or Price will be a bargain.
