Sometime in May I want to go to Capers for a night or two. Since the last time I planned the trip Oct 10th and that tropical storm came in I have been wanting to go. I know a couple of you mentioned then that you would go also. A group out there sounds like a good time and I hear the bull reds are a blast from the bank. Last person to sign up has to paddle with all the beer. I have a friend who is a fireman that said he could get the fire dept on Dewees bring ice to the beach of Dewees for us to pick up. Let me know who is interested.
Where is Capers?
Barrier Island north of Charleston (south of Bulls Bay) up the ICW.
sounds cool. Love to go if my wife is still not here. She’s coming in June, and 1 week in may, but the other weekends I am free.
Got any particular days you’re planning on going? If I can juggle it between the wife’s birthday and our anniversary I’m in.

My wife is coming, we will see how she holds up. lol. If you plan to go make sure to make a reservation with DNR…or parks and rec, forget which. I am planning at this point to leave Saturday the 19th at 10:30am to ride the tide out and come back the next day at 4pm when the tide is coming in. Leaving out of Gadsdenville drop point. I like that route better than from IOP. Take the right creek and you can just relax and enjoy the ride. The fun part is getting across the ICW. Lots of bug spray, tent with good bug nets and make sure to bring a camera. Absolutely beautiful landscapes to see while you fish.

Might be able to do it. Just checked on permits and it’s through DNR.

I’ve done this trip many times, thou its been a couple years. I’ve got a couple thoughts… The bull reds should be in the surf not the creeks which would make the fishing tough or impossible from kayak. Might should bring surf-rods? Also consider the north end, there is a creek behind the ocean that makes haul easier and more calm.
I’m up for anything ya’ll decide and want to go also.
Figured I would paddle out the bait to get a little deeper. I have been told both, that the north and south end are better… The one thing that may also make a difference is all the kayakers/boaters that come to hang out on the south end in the morning. Been told they are usually loud in the morning and wake you up. Any truth to that and is it the same on both ends? Also do you know if the north end is deeper and is it worth fishing off the sand bars or just stay on the beach?

But also, the north end is twice the distance. Do you know another drop point that is better for getting there?

thinking about doing the samething sometime soon, whats this about a permit?
You have to apply for a permit(always will get one) but they just want to know who is out there and when. Safety and management reasons for a public use island. Just leave it cleaner than when you got there. There are a lot of people that leave trash and beer bottles everywhere.

where do you go to get one?
I’d like to go, but can’t make 5-11 to 5-20, the wife will be in town so I will be unavailable. If you can go earlier or later, I’m in.
Call 843-953-9300 to request permit and they will mail it to you.

I’m down in Beaufort but i would drive up there for an epic trip like this? Would it be safe to leave my truck at the put in overnight?
yo
I would not leave my truck at Gadsdenville Road overnight
we put in at iop. on week days there are school field trips. and i can confirm the bull reds will be right off the big sandbar on the south end.take plenty of bug spray. have fun!
Anyone interested in doing the same trip May 27th to 29th? My wife is out of town, and I couold use a good fishing weekend. Let me know or send me a pm and I’ll make the arrangements.
Oooo… Didn’t think about the parking over night. That is true… Thanks for reminding me. Guess IOP is the way to go. Darn ghettos ruin everything.
