Had another opportunity to go out bottom fishing with my friend Captain Chris Morrison. I was on vacation at the beach with my wife’s family and got a charter to take 3 brother-in-laws and a nephew out. None had ever been beyond to creeks before, so to say the least we had a “green” crew. In fact a couple got REALLY green, but they powered through. The conditions to start were a little testy, so we stopped at a couple of spots closer in. After getting sick of sharks, we pressed on further out and had some non-stop action, including the nice scamp. The seas settled and we ended up catching a “mess” of B-liners and blackfish, some strawberries, and a couple of trigger fish.
Early in the afternoon we cruised a short distance toward shore and the “daymaker” occurred. We had caught an assortment of fish there, when Chris spotted a 7’ tiger shark at the surface. Following him closely was the cobia. Chris cut up one of our smaller catches and threw it in the circulating bait well for chum. I’ll be dam*ed if in short order my nephew, Ben, brought in the cobia! With that we headed home. The father-son “duo” from West Virgina had a GREAT first experience…
