If it rolled in a really big sea, would it right itself? A couple of you know the boat, and your thinking particularly interests me.

Not a chance. Plan of sitting on the bottom of the boat.

Thanks for posting and sharing the events. Good reminders in this thread!

I don’t think I admit to that. Or ever let it happen. Those boats have 2 bilge pumps per sponson, right? 4 bilge pumps not working? I’d assume they’re wired to different batteries.

I’m pretty sure Bryson inspired everyone in Charleston to rush out and purchase epirbs. I always buddy boat but his story really got me thinking about how prepared I really am. I know I’ll never go out there again without one.

Maybe everyone from GA to NC

that teak cupholder at the helm holds a PLB pretty well

I am glad to hear everyone is safe as well. I tell people all the time, that things happen quickly out there, whether it is a boat going down or the teeth of a big wahoo as you bring it in the boat. Good job keeping your crew safe.

At least you didn’t have to get a vasectomy after the wahoo incident Andy…

Polly Wanna…

I think something else to get out of this is if your boat doesn’t feel like it is taking the seas/running right, there is no shame in turning around. Non operating bilge pumps is a trip ender in my book as well. I say this after learning many of my lessons the hard way, so it is not me attempting to be holier than thou.

Polly Wanna…

Gotta agree about the bilge pumps.

C’mon now Cracker I did not say “huge” Wahoo. Bottom line is being prepared for an incident like this boat or a medical emergency is key.

Obviously they are not as important on my vessel due to the design. Most of the hull is dedicated to storage or fuel tank, so there isn't as much "space" to flood as with a v-hull. One big danger in flooding a v-hull is that the boat will list too far and could roll over when enough water get's on board. The further it lists, the more there is below the waterline to flood. There isn't enough floodable space on my cat to cause it to dangerously list.

Plus, I carry a portable bildge pump that I can stick in any hole and hook up to any battery source.

That being said, my issue has been mostly with broken float switch, not pump itself.

In my experience, when things go to heck, they usually go to heck real fast. You have to be prepared for whatever, before it happens. There won’t be time to prepare when it does. You can’t order an EPIRB from Amazon when you are treading water. Yet.

I don’t know, maybe Amazon is onto something with those drone deliveries

Bryson, we’ve never met but I want to say that you did an awesome job dealing with the worst event of your life and can still talk/write about it. I have learned a lot here. I hope I never have to be in a situation where people I like and love have to go through this. I will be making a lot more preparations as did you on my future trips on my boat. And I’ll be getting a PLB.

Ditto on the remarks about the way the captain handled this. Just remember to consider the differences (pros/cons) between PLB’s and EPIRB’s when deciding what suits best on your boat.

Next time you come in, come heavy, or not at all…

If I was out there treading water and wondering about where Mary Lee is, I’d want at least one of each

What?

I worked with a guy from S. Africa years ago! He told me that the only boat they used was a cat. They called them ski boats and launched them from the surf. He told me they would fill up the sponsons with 1000’s of pingpong balls as flotation! If the boat fills with water the ball are forced to the highest place! I once found a utube of them launching in 12’ surf. INTRESTING
