I’ve taken 2 different Sea School courses and they were both excellent. Those folks are truly professionals and will teach you what you need to know to pass the exams and guide you through the whole process. Now they even give the exams. We used to have to go to the Charleston CG station to take them.
Besides passing the knowledge exams, for a 6 pack license you need 360 documented days of operating a boat, a physical exam, eye and color blindness test, drug screening test, current basic first aid course, current CPR certification, background check, and until recently a TWIC card, now not required for OUIV of 6 passengers but still is for a Masters.

Thanks for the great info. I’ll take a look at the Sea School website.
If you have a busy schedule you can take it online through Mariner’s Learning System. Just have to be able to teach yourself. Chart plotting is a little tricky, but everything else is not too bad.
You still have to go through the TWIC process as part of the licensing application.

If you carry a valid CDL with a hazmat endorsment do you still have to go through the TWIC process? Seems like you go through the same process? Background, finger prints etc…thinking of taking the columbia class in June. Just trying to get my ducks in a row.
If the TSA says I can haul hazmat seems it would be fine. Plus I have to sit through TSA training/class once a yr.

you will absolutely need to get the card. anyone dealing with transportation near ports (water or air) are supposed to have one. stevedores, mariners, truck drivers, technicians… everybody. it isnt good for anything, but required none the less.
TWIC CARDS NO LONGER REQUIRED FOR SOME MARINERS
The Coast Guard has released a Policy Letter which modified the requirement that all mariners obtain a Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC) in order to be issued a Merchant Mariner Credential (MMC).
The Coast Guard is allowing mariners without a valid TWIC who operate on board vessels that do not have a security plan to acquire and renew a MMC. Specifically this policy will apply to mariners who are inactive or not operating under the authority of their credential, as well as those who serve on vessels that are not required to have a vessel security plan. These vessels include:
-
Uninspected passenger vessels of less than 100 gross register tons
-
Vessels inspected under subchapter T of Title 46 Code of Federal Regulations, except those on international voyages
-
Towing vessels not involved in towing barges inspected under 46 CFR subchapters D, I or O
-
Towing vessels involved in fleeting, docking, or ship assist
Mariners on the vessels described above will be permitted to renew an existing credential without submitting proof of hold a valid TWIC. The coast guard will implement policies, which will enable these mariners to acquire a MMC without having to make two trips to a TWIC enrollment center.
…Politicians aren’t the “Oldest Profession”, but the results are still the same!!!
