So my 02 5hp pull start mercury that I’m trying is just about good to go , or so I though I knew it has a water pump/ impeller issue bc it doesn’t pee water. But I cranked up and now it won’t stay cranked. I had brand new non e gas with proper oil mixture in it. It cranks up 1st or 2nd pull but dies shortly afterward. I took carburetor off and cleaned it, cleaned out and inspected fuel lines and bulb. It still won’t stay cranked. Any ideas?

Clogged fuel filter or possibly air leak (pinhole) in gas line or primer bulb? If it is a pinhole it would be between tank and primer bulb.
Check your spark plug like Chickenhawk said, and then buy a $5 spark plug gap tester and see how much spark you are getting. You should be getting 3/8" spark jump, or more.
You may also have issues with the fuel pump. If the fuel pump rebuild kit is cheap on your motor, go ahead and rebuild it. If the fuel pump has a screen in it that acts as a filter, check it as well.
Moral judgment under girds the entire structure of laws and is necessary for the rational structure of any significant statute. The idea that our laws can stand independent of moral foundation is senseless.----- Albert Mohler.
So you knew the water pump was bad and cranked it anyway? Might need to run a compression check on it now…

Yes phinfreak I did. It doesn’t appear that the carburetor is getting any gasoline to it for more than a few seconds… do I need to rebuild the carb or is it q fuel line issue somewhere in the motor? It’s such a small motor block it looks like an oversized weedeater, so its probably pretty hard to work on o would think!
After you fix the cooling issue, try starting the engine and pumping the primer ball from your fuel tank at the same time. If you can keep the engine running by pumping the primer ball, 9 out of 10 times its the fuel pump. Rebuild or purchase a new fuel pump. Good luck.![]()
HC- Thanks! Will definitely do that!
ChrisV I took it off and sprayed it with carb cleaner, is that wrong?
did you take it completely apart and clean the inside?
and remove the jets and clean all internal passages?
