Carbon Fiber Outrigger Poles Development-

Stick it in the sun, and it will post cure plenty as it is black don't you think?

Well, that’s what I’ve done on my limited CF projects so far, and yeah the black in the sun gets plenty hot. But I think if you are making them commercially you would get better and more consistent results with controlled temp post curing, according to everything I’ve read about it. I’m sure no expert though, so carry on :sunglasses:

Edit:
I will be more diplomatic with what I say about Bly Riggers. I came extremely close to buying a set of his myself. It’s just that before I dropped a grand on something, I looked at some that others had, and I researched as much as I could. No way am I dropping that kind of money unless I can resell the item(s) if I don’t like em or I am confident they’ll work and hold up well.

I had typed a few things I have seen and heard about Bly’s product, but I decided to delete them.

To each his own.

The direction I’m going in is less sections that don’t get as skinny at the top since they don’t have to sleeve inside one another. I’m also going to protect mine from UV damage, have tips that don’t break and have internal rigging.

Interested. Will look for future posts

Yep, Green sticks are a whole other beast. I’ve got a cool ballistic material I’d likely use for those. A stiff “mast” sticking off the top of the vessel is definitely not what you want for that. Most all of the materials are listed on our website. The carbon sale ends a week from next tuesday though. Not sure if it will be ongoing after that and it’s pretty much half price.

I forgot to mention… if you’re not doing the collapsable sort, you should look at carbon inner ferules. You could even put a little pin spring that snaps into a hole on the other side for people that want to be able to take it apart. Permanently assembled versions would benefit from a reinforced joint.

Phin let me know if you need some help with this. We can slap them on the seafox for endurance testing!

Got several concepts I am going to test.

Waiting on some specialty hardware “samples” I bought to decide what to use. Decided to go internal rigging with everything.

I’m going to mess with an idea I have for a center rigger and small outriggers and mounts for smaller boats at the same time. Boat will look funny with like 5 outriggers and two VHF antennas sticking up.

I have a set of 21’ Bly’s Riggers now. I like them pretty good except for extending and collapsing them. I run three lines so it is a pain in the ass to keep all that crap straight. I would like a set that was one piece or one long and one short so that all of the lines didn’t have to collapse. I trailer my boat so they need to be somewhat collapsible. But as long as they don’t extend much past the outboard motors it would be fine. It’s 15’ from the bases to the back of the motors when they are in the down position.

Put your thinking cap on and find me a solution.

Will the “PhinRiggers” come with a t-shirt?

I got t-shirts,I’m thinking bobble head.

A bobble head of an “outrigger”? I don’t think you would want to keep that on your desk at the office!!!

I’m refining my bobblehead idea to a T-shirt with a bobblehead on it…phin(bobblehead)riggers

How about 17ft fixed poles that are stiffer than what you have so no slack in your halyards and constant tangling when pulling tight clip pressure on your longs, and with internal halyard rigging for triple rigging and a line stowing system when they’re dropped down?

I am assuming you are running

  • long clip
  • short clip
  • teaser ring

?

If you want them to be collapsible, then can’t do internal rigging- at least not anything that’d hold up for long.

I’m trying to not do collapsible because I want less weight and stiffer.

One option is taking the poles out of the mounts and laying them on your deck when you trailer. I’m trying to use a coating on the poles that will protect them from UV and abrasion, so doing that would work.

Idea sounds great, especially with the weight and strength, etc. I like it. Got a Pioneer that would be thrilled to tryout some trial riggers if it would help you out. Excited to hear about something like this, especially for the smaller boat owners who try to fish like the big boyz!

I’m going to build a 12ft center rigger with 3 different mounting options also.

Probably going to make it useful for other things on a fishing boat also.

I like versatility.

I think that Phin is really onto something that will be a great option for the smaller fleet, as Got toGo mentioned.

For anyone that would question his attention to detail and quality of product, just look at his Mako rebuild. How he got through all that with the many challenges he had early on should speak for itself.

No dog in this hunt but, he will not focus this much attention on something to fail.

If I didn’t have riggers on my boat already, I would be the first on the list to get some.

Good luck on your product Wes, and Thanks for all the info you provide many of us about what is going on in our fishery!!

Knowing how detailed Phin is,I call first dibs on the set that doesn’t meet his standards ie:scratch n dent.

This is turning into an expensive project. “Little” parts and testing of ideas have been adding up, and I am still waiting on some more hardware to come from manufacturers/distributors now. Vendors are shocked to hear how many of something I’m wanting and are either out of it or have only one in stock. Might be an ongoing problem, but I guess that’s what happens when you want really nice stuff.

I have bases for Taco and Rupp mounts figured out, and like I told G2G, I also will also make some 12ft center rigger or small boat outriggers that can mount 3 different ways on tops or gunnels. These will be all carbon fiber and with internal rigging. 2 of those mounting options will be non-permanent and all 3 will make for easy adjustment and detachment of the rigger poles from the boat for storage if wanted. Just need to make sure they will hold in rough water. Only one way to find out, g2g.

I appreciate the votes of confidence above. Thanks

Getting so many requests for collapsible poles that I’ve got to look into that option as well. Ordered some more hardware this morning…
