Was out at SI yesterday late morning with the family, around post 19 and the channel was busy, busy with lots of personal boats and cargo ships. Water was flat as a lake so a lot of people heading to the jetties.
Anyway, one cargo ship gave about 15 horn blasts. Hadn’t heard this before but I’m assuming some knucklehead either anchored in the shipping lane or someone wasn’t giving proper way?
There was a sailboat heading towards him and I was wondering if the Capt just wanted to make sure the sail had plenty of time to move?
I’m assuming he was just giving warning?
(Wish I would have brought my spinning gear to rip some spoons across the surface on the beach. love catching jacks and Spanish that way)
Skipper & Pilot just covering their a$$ & possibly yours.
You cause them to signal ya best make a move, shortest direction away from their intended heading. Not much leeway in their maneuvering around you. Them backing down to keep you from going out of sight or worse is a sure way to have a blue light vessel come alongside.
St John’s River going out of Jacksonville has it’s share of boaters who believe the Rules of the Road they read on a coozie apply to all.
Congested waterways in Asia have pilots sweating from making repeated requests to local coastal shipping traffic. Someday I’ll slip a GoPro on the bridge. Would have to rate it R 'cause I’m sure there are some explicit references made but don’t understand a darn thing they say.
