Carlina SKiff bow mount trolling motor problem

I can’t keep my trolling motor securely mounted on a 23’ DLV Carolina Skiff. After several runs the screws work their way loose and motor will dislodge. Trolling motor is a Minnkota

Solutions I am thinking about are:

  1. Anchor butterfly bolts with stainless steel bolts.
  2. After market locking base

Thanks for solutions.

they make fastners for that specific purpose. Any marine shop should have what you need.

Bar Mar Marine off of Remount Rd. had a bunch of those s/s toggle bolts for $1/each when I was over there a few weeks ago. I was using the rubber mounting isolators by Minn Kota, but they did not last two trips before the bolts started to loosen.

i’m guessing thru-bolting is not an option?

Marshwabbit,

I can through bolt the front two bolts, they are in front of the hatch compartment. Since the boat is 23 feet my arms will not reach through the hatch to through bolt last two. I can’t get any parents approval to have a 5 year old go down in there and hold nut. (Just kidding, but that would work) My arms miss by about 6 inches.

Unless there is a better way, I am going to have to drill hole litte bigger and put a anchor bolt system in or a toggle bolt.

I can’t believe with all the carolina skiffs out there they haven’t found a better way.

duct tape the nut into a wrench and you’ll be able to reach it.

Try these stainless steel togglers. I use them to mount computer displays on hollow walls and also secured a seat pedistal in a Welcraft V-20. Fastenal has them. The anchor stays securely to the hollow wall and you can remove the bolts and the anchor stays in place.

That’s what Bar Mar has for $1/each…MUCH less than they sell for in West Marine.

Lowes also has those.

i had to get an alum plate made that i could thru-bolt. mounted the MK quick release to it.

Bar Mar also has some other kinds that pinch up when the screw is tightened up That I used on a 14 McKee for a foot controlled. Loosewire I bought some of those long rubber ones from searay and the held about an hour before coming apart. Did a quick stainless toggle bolt install before Jazzed came over to go fishing. The guy at Bar Mar is very helpful and has a variety of stuff.

Thanks everyone! Picked up toggles at bar mar and brought up to boat in Wrightsville. Drilled holes little bigger, inserted togglers and trolling motor is snug and sturdy.

Now if fishing was that easy.
