carp on fly

What kind of carp do I see “tailing” in the golf course ponds? Will they eat a fly? I have heard of people targeting grass carp on the fly. I’m not sure whether or not these are grass carp.

yes, a little glo bug will nail em but they are hella spooky. small nymphs work 2. most are grass carp but there are a few mirror carp around. uglier and usually missing scales. bigger scales. they are actually easy to catch if you treat em like a bonefush. try a stout hares ear nymph.

sometimes they are suckers for hoppers, beatles or anything that goes “plop” on surface like a bug or berry… be careful handling them they aren’t nearly as durable as reds

Almost all the golf course ponds ive fished for carp in have had grass carp exclusively, my favorite technique (while its probably not quite so sportsman-like) is to find a carp that is munchin on a patch of algae. take a small popping bug and cast it on top of the algae mat and wait till he eats the algae with the bug on top of it. More like bait fishin than fly fishin but if your just tryin to bend a rod its sure fire. Here’s one i caught when i was 16 using that technique, i hooked him when the sun was still out, landed him quite some time later.

hells yea dude, nice un. and the hulkster shirt only makes it cooler! baitin and switchin carp, i dig it!! dis dont leave the forum but my 1st carpe diem was chummed into a crackhead frenzy w/ bread and selfishly tossed a stimulator and only THEN did i come to realize the underapreciated carp. thats a great pick btw! send it to winston

Nice shirt. I went through a CV phase when I wa 17.

PETA would take offense to that…

Will the bigger fish not straighten the hook on the bass/brim poppers and the smaller nymphs? I guess you gotta play them pretty slow.

Actually man the last fish i caught on a size 8 popper was about 40 lbs, i was using a 5 wt. so the fight was long and the drag pressure was minimal. If you’ve got the time to fight the fish for over a half an hour you can land him on almost anything.

Colt, like most fish, do you see that the carp behave differently in the winter months (cold water temps)?

Act very lethargic in the winter time, i see them just sitting on the bottom most of the time. I like the warmer months by far for carp fishin, and especially the evening time in the spring and summer.

Had a big carp on this evening…on the first fly I have ever tied myself to make it even sweeter. You must have to really drive the hook home on these fish because he shook the hook pretty quick. Still a rush though.

Another one on tonight…broke my 6 pound tippet. I’m going back with the 8wt and a heavy tippet and its on. Lost my two go-to flies though. Need to get some material to tie olive wooly’s.

Better save one for me!

Had a moment of insanity while fishing a pond and threw a dahlburg diver at a large carp. The fish went nuts and exploded on it. Unfortunately, it didn’t get the hook. I have caught plenty of bass on that fly that have not blown it up that hard.

It definitely got my heart going!

A buddy of mine nabbed a 20in carp OTF yesterday… Man was that a fight… Dang near fell in trying to land it! He was using a smaller bwon sparkly colored woolly bugger about a size 12, I was fishing with Eric Mannino from ESPN’s Get Schooled, over here and I nabbed a few on a olive bugger wiht a little red on the nose. We swiped a canoe and paddled out near the main palace here and had a blast. Show shoulw be airing in amonth or so  Carp are a blast OTF…

Nice to see others fishing for the elusive “GoldenBones” They are a blast on the fly. Some of my favorite patterns/techniques…Green chernoble ant with a small dropper trailing behind. They will check out the ant and eat the dropper. Also green leach patterns stripped super slow. Anyone else have any techniques feel free to share

They have been eating olive boogers for me…also had one slurp a chart clouser

A couple of guys out in Colorado put together a decent book - “Carp on the Fly”
http://www.amazon.com/Carp-Fly-Flyfishing-Barry-Reynolds/dp/1555661866

They cover some non-standard flies based on seeds, berries etc that carp eat. Also some good tactics in there. They dubbed the lowly carp as the “Rocky Mountain Bonefish” saying, what other fish around here can you sight-fish for that will weigh over 10 lbs and give you a rod-breaking fight?
