Now that the grass flats have died down and the winds will probably pick, I am looking for a new fix this winter on the weekends.
I have been to a couple of developement ponds and I have seen some carp. I think these are grass carp that have been put in to eat the algae, I would assume. Can you catch this type and if so, what kind of fly do you use. I have casted small clousers to them when they were cruising, but they are very spooky and would not eat.
Thanks for any help.
Chris.
We catch them up here on big bushy nymphs. Generally, if you cast in front of one by about 5-6 feet, let the fly rest, and bump it when he gets close, it will be game on.
Bread fly man, i had the pleasure of fishing for common carp in california this summer and they eat nymphs and clousers great, but i’ve fished for grass carp a long time and only caught one on a bugger, after a solid year of rejection using proven (common) carp flies, i gave up and just started matching the whole wheat hatch. I know other people have had success with nymphs and such, i’d just rather be into my backing with a bread fly than still casting a nymph. you can catch mullet in the ponds with the same bread techniques.
bread fly? Do tell more.
I use a regular stainless steel 3/0 hook, wrap the shank with white chenille, and tie thick foam on the top like a gurgler. I’ve seen some glo ball bread flies too, but the topwater one is the most fun, seein a 40lber rise to a bread fly is the best.
thanks colt. pics to come.

My dad has a couple of automatic feeders on his pond. The move grass carp move in with the gills. Make a “pellet” fly with some rainey’s float foam and a egg hook. Here is a few.
