cast net for offshore bait?

is it possible to cast net for cigar minnows offshore? we saw a few boats attempting this yesterday and they just seemed to chase the bait around with little success…

Never tried but in FL that use canned cat food to draw them up and then throw the net but most down there just buy them from the bait boats

You can chum them up with a mix of sand oatmeal and regular chum. All this mixed together dirties the water. Using a very large net with bigger holes and heavy weight you can have a shot at catching a few. This is what we do to top off the tanks after catching bally-hoo with hooks.

How far off shore and how deep? I like sarbiki rigs in deeper water for bait. Takes some time but they are candy to the bottom fish.

these guys were in 40-50’ of water near the shipping channel a few miles off the rocks…yea, I’ve sabiki’d them too but was wondering the success rate of cast netting for them…they seem too quick and have too much water column to be successful…

So your rope is 40 feet with enough lead to get it down?

They Are faster then you.

Does not have to hit the bottom. When we do the bally-hoo, you will see them start to role when they start hitting the sides of the net and then you just sinch tight.

that might work with ballyhoo, but good luck with hardtails or sardines!

I’ve caught ballyhoo in the net when they are eating behind the chum bag. Never tried for cigar minnows, let me know if you have any luck.
