Cast Net suggestions

Trying to find a good cast net for beginners, but I don’t want something that is so small it’s not going to help me get some bait fish and a few shrimp. Just looking for some suggestions. Also I’m not looking for something that is going to cost me an arm and a leg. Thanks for the help.

Just get a six foot, 3/8 or 1/2 inch net from walmart. Cheap net for learning and not big deal if you throw it over a shell rake.

Olde Man Charters

The above advice is good. I use a 5ft Walmart net for bait near shells. A 5ft. net is easier to learn to throw, and the 3/8 mesh will catch bait shrimp when there are only small ones available. It is legal to use 3/8" mesh as long as you have no baitshrimping gear in the boat such as poles, bait, etc.

If you want some shrimp for the table, you can upgrade to a Betts Blue net in 6 ft. x 1/2" mesh. It is a little more expensive, but throws much better and the 1/2" mesh releases most of the small shrimp.

Later, when you get good with a net, and want to catch shrimp over bait, you can get an expensive 7 or 8 ft. x 5/8" mesh net, which would sink faster and be better in deeper water.

6ft 3/8" wallyworld net. Expect to tear it up when learning. I went through 4-5 nets a year in the beginning throwing from shore.
I find 4 and 5ft nets harder to throw. Just too small for my throwing method (no mouth).

I got a 5ft tyzac bait net with 1/4 inch mesh you can catch small mud minnows in it and grass shrimp. Its feels like cheating compared to my 6ft 3/8 mesh net because of how much more bait it catches. Pros are easy to throw, fits in smaller holes, catches small bait quicker, cons is the wind will blow it around because its light and the holes are tight. I spent 50 on the tyzac and 75 on the six ft. Its important to use specific nets for certain baits and conditions to be more effective. Deeper water and large baits like big mullet menhaden you want a heavier net with larger mesh but when throwing for shrimp, small mullet, glass minnows in shallow waters 6ft or less my tyzac is unbeatable in my experience and bait doesn’t get caught like a gill net. Sometimes I get so much bait off a few cast I will use my landing net to cull out the smaller baits. I used to buy Walmart nets but once I experienced better I really rather spend the extra to save time and energy later on, you really do catch that much more.

I was fishing a couple of weeks ago with Capt. Herb and our first priority was catching bait. I was throwing a 5’ 3/8 mesh and all of the bait was running right through the net. Herb was throwing 1/4" mesh net and putting them in the boat. Throwing side by side, he caught 100 to my 1. I’m getting a smaller bait net. Made me feel inadequate [:I]

I never thought to go smaller than 3/8" mesh. I learn something new on this site every day! If I keep diligently studying this site, one day I will be able to outsmart a fish!

I did not realize Tyzac was a Betts product. Amazon has a 5 ft “Nylon” (not mono?) Tyzac 1/4" mesh net for $52.52.

Anyone have experience of using Nylon? How does it compare to mono?

I throw a 6’ Tyzec net and love it. I personally can’t see big bucks for a net that at some point will get hung up on oysters or some other destructive thing. The Tyzec throws well and catches glass minnows and up.

So it holds up just as well as mono?
Are 1/4" mono nets not made?

Do you have to pay $10 per new net? (Not that that’s bad)

No but when replaced can buy another yr plan for 8-10$. Price depends on net price

Does anyone know what the term “Tyzac” means? I tried to Google it, but did not find out if the term is a type of material, a style net, etc. I was thinking it was a Betts trade name for an inexpensive nylon net, but Bass Pro carries a “Tyzac” net.

I found with a 1/4" mesh net a lot fewer finger mullet and other small fish get “gilled” in the mesh.
I use a 6ft 1/4 mesh for bait casting for finger mullet, mud minnows or even menhaden…
Unless I’m looking for big menhaden in front of the island it’s 7 or 8 ft 1/2" mesh.

I just spent 30 minutes online chatting with them. No reference to that number corresponding with a warranty. I gave them a few net item numbers, and they said there were no replacement plans linked to any of the nets.

I guess you got lucky. Or, it’s been discontinued because it was stupid to begin with (on their part).
