i am really getting the rod wet this week. went yesterday and today, and will continue to do so everyday until i get my first striper. but i am not wanting to get too wet if i don’t have to since i have been going before work…so here’s the question; the fish are probably 80’ off the bank, and i know i need to still work on my casting but is this a doable distance for most people to cast or do i just need to bite the bullet and get wet and bring some clothes.
80 ft. shouldn’t be too much of a problem if you got a good double haul and the wind is low, which it usually is early in the AM, if you can work up enough line speed you can keep a fairly short amount a line out of the rod tip and shoot most of the way to eighty feet
where are you going for the striper? lake murray? i would love to catch one on a fly.
as long as you have an 80 foot back cast area that is clear… If I were you I’d bring some clothes and get a little closer… 80’ is a hell of a haul. I like about 30-40 feet at the most… easier to do and when you hok up you are not straight into the backing from the get go. If you are able to throw an 80’ cast consistently I need to come see you and learn from you… I get excited when I throw a 60-footer that is decent…

I can throw 80-90 ft using a 30-40 foot double haul and I have thrown the whole 105’ but it ain’t easy to get it all out and straight, especially if you have any wind. I think you need to get a little wet since you could probably cut 20 feet off just walking out until your knees are wet.

80’ is doable… but you need some room behind you… at least 40’-50’. And you might need to practice a bit… hucking a fly 80’ is no good if it balls up at the end of the cast, and your accuracy is gonna suffer. I would just pack some waders, and walk out a little ways… but thats just me.
