what is considered a long cast? and what kind of reel throws baits the farthest?
This feels like a trick
Nah, just curious
Nah, just curious
Type of line, line strength, and weight tied to the end of it… A heavy weight will certainly help in distance… Then you have to add in wind speed and direction…
I think I have to agree with Pea pop. This sounds like a trick.
“Why Bruce?”
Long cast? 150 yards.
Which reel? baitcaster. Although I dont use one in the salt. But a spinner will do it.
I have mostly hand-me-down gear from a very nice neighbor. Seven and a half foot medium action rods with fast tip. Shimano and Penn 2500 & 3000 Series reels. 10 lb braid.
It’ll throw a spook Jr a long way. Long casts and covering water are key for trout fishing-i got that outta the book you sent us.
I’m not sure exactly what a long cast is. I know it when I see it though
As a kid fishing the surf on Ocracoke, all of the big hitter long caster’s had baitcasting reels like ambassadors and 10 ft long rods
Hey Pea,did you know any O’Neal family on Ocracoke . I knew Harry and a few of his brothers
Depends on what you chunkin! #10 braid and a spoon or gotcha will go a long ways on a 7.5’ rod. Then a 14’ surf rod with a supped up mag conventional will throw a 150 gm weight a loooooooong ways. Over 825’. Not that I can but, the distance caster tourney guys can. Google Tommy Farmer in NC.

sman, i was a visitor. didn’t know anybody except wayne at the tackle shop, the clerk at the pony island motel.
the world record is like over 500 yards and they use extra long rods and ambassadeurs
i was really interested in how far local johnny inshorefisher does with a typical 7ft rod and spinning or casting reel.
i think i can chunk em pretty good, but maybe not.

i googled the casting records, and found about a 1000 ft referenced, pardon my error
dparker, 150 yards is reel long way. what tackle and bait?
The long distance Ambassadeurs they are throwing have the level wind removed. If you want to speed up your baitcasters, remove the spool and clean the spool shaft’s (axle),level wind cover, and the worm gear with a scotch brite non scratch pad and blue magic metal polish cream. This may require two application’s. Scrub and buff until all the black tarnish is gone. Let dry and buff, with a soft cloth. Use a good thin oil sparingly after buffing. Too much oil will slow everything down. You want these part’s slicker than snot. Clean or replace the bearing’s, and let dry thoruoghly. And then use only one small drop of oil on the bearings. Place the bearing on the beveled wood of a sharpened pencil and spin. If it still spins slow replace the bearings. Just remember good replacement bearing’s are not cheap.
I experimented with a 6500 Ambassadeur, I installed a Ceramic pawl, worm gear bearing’s, and new ABEC bearings, and did all the polishing, and shining. I may have gained 50 feet casting distance. I ended up with a lot of money in this reel. Is it worth it?
A cheap casting reel that throws far is a diawa sealine, but you better have a well trained thumb. Inshore for me 50ft is a normal far cast and a little over 100ft is probably as far as I can cast a artey. Inshore fishing I fish small areas and concentrate on small areas at a time. So for me its more of a accuracy thing then distance since most set ups will throw 50ft. I usually throw up current and retrieve with arties and let bait drift down current to my target. If your talking pitching something like a small shrimp with just a hook spinning is easier to me.
I just went outside and measured a spook cast. 128’

10’ med heavy, fast action, Boca 50, 15lb mono main line, 4oz. sinker. But most of my “fishing” casts are well with in 50yrds.
About 10 years ago I went thru the process of upgrading some of my ABU baitcasters. I asked questions on some casting forums, and a tournament caster told me to do about the same as corkman has suggested. He also told me unless I was interested in extreme casting distance, to stick with stainless bearings. He said the APEC 7 ceramic bearings, for the cost would not give me enough additional distance for fishing purposes to justify the additional cost. I went with APEC 5 stainless bearings which should have been a bit better than the factory installed bearings. I can’t prove they are, and frankly, a good cleaning & polishing as corkman said, on other reels I have combined with a good reel oil, made a world of difference too, without changing bearings. BTW, those were all level wind reels & I left the level wind on them. I did however upgrade to a level wind with 2 bearings. Bearings, over bushings makes some improvement. If the factory bearings are not worn out, a good cleaning, polishing & better oil can see improvement in a baitcasting reel.
Like others, most of the fishing I’ll do has been within 100 feet and more so within 50 when casting lures. Occasionally, I’ve tossed some bait in the surf, and made longer casts, but with lures, usually it’s a cast of 100 ft or less.
To the original question, I think a long cast depends on the situation. A long cast in the surf and a long cast in a creek can be two different things. Baitcasters in the hands of an accomplished caster can throw the same weight long distances, but similar can be said for a person with a spinning outfit. Strictly distance, it’s likely the casting reel will out perform the spinning reel, which is why the tournament casters use them, if on rods of similar length and with the same weight & line diameter. It takes time & practice to get good at longer distance with either, and more so with the casting reels.
But for most of us, and fishing, does it really matter? IMO, if you use what you’re most comfortable and accomplished with for cas
7’6" med rod fast tip, 2500 shimano stradic ci4, 10lb power pro, thin Cajun thunder popping cork with a couple split shot on a 3’ leader will sling a mud minnow about 100 yds with the wind at your back. But then you catch hell seeing your cork…

100 yards is a long way for a spinner
im using micro guides on my go to rigs.
do they impact casting distances pro or con?
