my offshore charter trip got pushed back to may 19 due to weather and reading peoples reports casting for a mahi sounds fun. what lures work best for them or does it really matter? i have a couple big spoons, jigs, topwaters, ect that i could toss out. any advice is appreciated.
If you have a charter you more than likely won’t be casting for them unless they are stacked and thick in spots Who are you going with?
“Good things come to those who bait”
knot@work…he said if i wanted i could bring a casting rod and throw at them if we find em stacked.
Bucktail jig, DOA shrimp, trout trick have all worked. Small pieces of cut bait (squid is good) work as well. Fast retrieve is the key. Cast and let it sink for a bit to get past the schoolies and to the big boys.
Headed to Hawaii?
We call them dolphin here in SC…
I’ve had the best success with soft artificials in electric chicken color. Like Steel Man said, a fast and erratic retrieve. When you hook one fish, put the rod in a holder until you hook another one. Try to keep a hooked fish in the water all the time, it turns on the rest of them and the school won’t leave the fish. Throw in small handfuls of chopped squid or ballyhoo to keep them fired up. Then cast a small piece of squid on a bare hook into the mob.

Almost anything will work. The important thing is to make sure that you lead the fish. I have never seen one try to eat anything that came from behind. Have casted at them with ultralight 100s of time. 10-20 pound dolphin are a ton of fun on a light rig
If you can find something that DOESN’T work, please let us know. I would be curious to know what that mythical object was.
thanks for the advice everyone! wont be too upset if i dont get one casting i mostly just want to get out and experience offshore once before i leave, however if the opportunity presents itself id love to take a crack at one with lighter tackle.

actually there is a small chance i may be headed to hawaii my friend. although i put in for kings bay, georgia for my next duty station uncle sam may tell me in a couple weeks i am more needed for sub duty in pearl harbor reading other peoples reports ive also seen plenty others call them mahi too.
If you catch a bonita…strips of that are the ticket. We put 20 in the boat off of one of those one time. They hit that over the ballyhoo and squid we had going
If they don’t eat what you throw, keep changing up your bait till you find something they do eat. Often if they’re picky, you can get one fish to fire up on a certain bait, they’ll all go nuts trying to get it. It just takes one interested fish to make it happen. Be careful with any lures with treble hooks though as they can get dicey when into a bunch of fish.
ONN, if we meet up for some fishing before you do the offshore thing, remind me because I have a huge chartruese bucktail I bought years ago that I don’t even think I’ve ever opened. You should be able to cast it a good solid nautical mile.

Chances are he’ll be heading to places you and I have never even heard of.

not a problem and the biggest thing i will call a mahi, dolphin, … is delicious not to worry when online haters come i almost always reply with a sarcastic but true statement and regard them as a form of amusement
If it moves they will usually eat it and if not something blue & white will get them every time!!! They are the one of the most aggressive fish out there, need the food to compensate for a fast growth rate.
Consistently get them on sinking plugs but the small treble hooks don’t always hold. The main thing is to be in the right place. We always cast in front of the boat while trolling along a weed line on a nice rip. Casing as close to mats as possible is best. Often you can spot them and sight cast. Go get em.
