Castnet question

Is it legal to catch Gamefish from a pier, or surf, with a castnet? I read the SCDNR regs, but could not see anything illegal with this practice. The reason for the ? is, I saw some young fellows catch two really nice Sheepheads at IOP pier a few weeks back, at low tide, throwing around the pier pilings. If it is legal, I might just give it a try! Seeya, Scott

If you read the regs for each fish most of them state they have to be caught by a hook thru the mouth. Just read the scdnr book very carefully cause “I didn’t know” won’t get you out of a ticket.

“Fishing is not a matter of life or death. It’s much more important than that!”

I see the “Hook and Line” only in the Fresh Water regs. but not in Salt Water.

As long as you have a valid saltwater license, harvest them with an approved type of net (ex. cast net vs gill net) and the fish is of legal size to possess, you are A OK.

Thanks for the info. Open Bar!!

The regs say to be 50ft on more away from pier while fishing from shore in Horry Co. No other county is mentioned.
