Cataloochee

My wife and I went to the mountians this weekend to get to some cooler weather. Ended up in the Cataloochee valley in the Great Smokies. We hiked up one of the trails and looked into some of the old houses and the school house. As we were getting ready to head back home a lot of people started comming in and setting up their folding chairs along all the pull outs near the valley. We soon found out why, the Elk started comming out to feed in the fields. It was a sight to see.

If you go to Cataloochee it is way off the beaten path. There is nothing up there but a National park camp ground and a couple public bathrooms. The temp is getting cooler up there already but still good. Some friends of ours went to Cherokee this past weekend and said it was in the seventies to high sixties at night. Cherokee has a lot more to offer but not the total isolation that Cataloochee has.

To get to Cataloochee go up I-26 to Asheville, NC and take I-40 west to exit 20. The offramp circles under the interstate and then you need to take the first right. The road is good for a while but later it gets very twisty. When it turns to dirt/gravel most people make sure to have their headlights on because the road is narrow and has a lot of blind curves, don’t get too close to the edge of the road.

It’s worth the trouble to get there but make sure you have food, water and drinks (no alcohol! national park rules) with you before you start up the mountian. Watch for very big amimals.
