Catch 22 5/20

left Ashley Marina at 5:00 am. headed south toward Royal terrace. took it easy ridin 28 -30 with slow rollers. ran the hi speed wahoo rigs on bent butts after passing RT while we set up the riggers (always seems to take longer than it should - ie tangled lines/halyards) anyway, got the lines in at 300’ or so and shortly found a nice patch of weeds. found a half a pallet/wood thingy that shoulda held a dozen - passed it 4 times and got a single. kept pushing, saw lots of sportys in the area workin the weed, made it out to 500’ and had abite or two along the way. missed a couple at the bote. seas were building and bite was slow. heard a lot of chatter on the noise box ‘bout the inshore bite on the ledge. wound in the lines, left the riggers out and ran 20kts or so in toward sw banks. took forever.
Started putting the lines in after hitting 190’. first line in gets slammed. rod points straight down and screaming. Everody gets pretty excited even though we’re gettin tossed pretty good. Mojo backs downwhile the crew works at winding in what we thought was gonna be a beast. turns out to be a decent tuna but was foul hooked. bote the fish and start sending the lines back out again and the first outer rigger out get slammed, blue and pink squitch w/ a ballyhoo. reel is sreamin again. tough fight but we managed to boat a real nice bull 45-50lbs. had another hit a deep runner but must have got crossed in the lines. lure was on wire, saw it jump, nice dolpin, but something cut the line and we lost lure and all. seas too sporty, decided to head in. first wet ride in. got to the jettys and was following a sportfisher. all we could do to stay with it. 35 kt washing machine. glad to get to the dock.
