Catching bait now?

I tried everything I know around paradise to catch shrimp or anything to fish with. Nothing. None popping, no micro grass shrimp, no mullet or other small fish.

Am I missing something about where to look?

Was it low tide or high tide? I was down on the backside of Sullivan’s last week checking out a kayak launch site and saw bait jumping all over…it was low tide. Not sure if it is just me but, I have a much harder time catching bait at high tide. Too much water.

this time of year bait can sometimes be hard to find. Try deeper areas.

It was falling, low, and three hours of rise. Depths from 1’ to 9-10’.

Dear Reel…You can consistently catch bait at Haddrell’s Point Tackle and Supply in Mt. Pleasant and West Ashley. You’ll need a wallet filled with some greenbacks, a friendly attitude, and an open mind. When you get to the area, be prepared to ask for help. Something along the lines of…“What do you recommend for a guy whose an average Joe trying to catch a few fish this time of year?” Then pay attention. The guys and girls behind the counters are genuine pro’s, and they want you as a repeat customer. Soft plastic baits are the dominant species this time of year. Some claim to be superior to others, but you will figure that out by trying a few different ones. I’m not saying to put the cast net in the attic, but I’d show up at the landing with a half a dozen options in my tackle box this time of year. I’ll bet the 1st time you get a solid strike on a slow retrieve and land a keeper trout, you’ll have an epiphany. Good luck.

I always ask for their most dedicated mud minnows.

You know that is another one, I have tried 4-5 creeks around the goose creek river and I can’t seem to catch mud minnows, any time of the year. I have used bread, trout chow, cat food, hard and soft. Next I am thinking some cherry bombs and a dip net…

Dear Reel…Catch a legal blue crab, or go to a seafood outlet and ask for a couple of dead ones. Break them up and put them in a minnow trap for a 2hr soak. If that doesn’t catch minnows then they ain’t there. Try someplace else…preferably where live oysters grow.

I have not tried that one.
