catching bait

Does anyone catch any bait up in the rivers when you see it on the fish finder, I am seeing lots of bait balled up in the creeks on the sounder and am wondering if I could catch it throwing a big cast net on it. instead of buying bait and hauling it up there, especially since its time for Richard to go on vaca for a month.

My experience is that 99% of that bait u are marking is threadfin shad. You can catch all you want along the banks but 90% of it is too small to use. 1-2" in length and usually die after being put on a hook. Out a big net full you might get 3-4 4"+ baits.

Just my 2 cents. David will probably have bait yr round and that would be your best bet once Richard closes…

Like Chip said most of what you catch are going to be small, but that is what the fish are feeding on! Try using a smaller hook on thie small threadfins and a crappie float at about 3’ it will keep them from hugging the bottom. I have caught some good Gizards around the bridge rocks on the little Saluda, be careful you can tear up a good net there!

Next time I go, hopefully friday, I might get a few dozen and try to catch some and see what happens. Thanks for your input guys.
