Catching Bait

Does anyone know the best way to catch bait off a pier on a creek off of the Wando? I’ve got a cast net and will catch some shrimp later in the year. I’m not having any luck with my minnow trap. Any suggestions?

we’ve been catching small shrimp in some of the creeks near us. As for your minnow trap, we’ve had the best luck lately by putting the trap in during low tide, near the bank at the top of the water and using broken up frozen mullet as bait.

Anywhere you can throw a minnow trap in a small creek will work. Anywhere the road borders a creek. You might get your feet muddy, but, put a long line on the trap. Bait it with a crushed crab. Throw it in. Get some lunch and retrieve the trap. Note that if left to long, traps grow legs and walk away.

I have not had luck catching fish. However, I put a minnow trap in small creek at low tide with bread for bait and within minutes have plenty of bait.

I’ve found that minnow traps don’t work very well in current. The scent of the bait seems to draw them in better in still water.

same here. I try to leave trap in overnight to catch the different tides. At low tide can get 1 or 2 dozen in 15 to 30 minutes. In a creek with about 12 inches of water where I put the trap
